Extraction of a normal wisdom tooth?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask, after having my upper and lower right wisdom teeth extracted on Tuesday night, it has been four days.
When I chew food on the left side, I feel a soreness in the area of the right wisdom teeth.
Is this normal? There is no pain when I'm not chewing.

Hello: The initial healing of a tooth extraction wound takes at least 7 days.
It is recommended to maintain cleanliness and take care.
If there is swelling, pain, or bleeding, seek medical attention promptly.
Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

It is quite common to experience some level of discomfort or pain after the extraction of wisdom teeth, especially in the first few days following the procedure. The pain you are feeling on the right side when chewing with your left side is not unusual and can be attributed to several factors related to the healing process.
Firstly, after a wisdom tooth extraction, the surrounding tissues, including the gums and jawbone, undergo a healing process that can cause sensitivity and discomfort. The extraction site may still be inflamed, and as the area heals, it can lead to sensations of pain or discomfort, particularly when pressure is applied, such as during chewing. This is often referred to as "referred pain," where discomfort is felt in an area adjacent to the actual site of injury or surgery.
Additionally, if the adjacent teeth were impacted during the extraction or if there was any manipulation of the surrounding tissues, they might also be sensitive for a period of time. This sensitivity can manifest as a dull ache or sharp pain when pressure is applied, such as when chewing food.
It is also important to consider that the healing process can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may experience more discomfort than others based on their pain tolerance, the complexity of the extraction, and their overall health. If you had any pre-existing dental issues, such as cavities or gum disease, these could also contribute to the discomfort you are experiencing.
If you are not experiencing pain when not chewing, it suggests that the extraction site is likely healing properly, but the act of chewing may be irritating the area. It is crucial to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions, which typically include recommendations for pain management, dietary restrictions (such as avoiding hard or crunchy foods), and maintaining oral hygiene without disturbing the extraction site.
However, if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling, fever, or discharge from the extraction site, it is essential to contact your dentist. These could be signs of complications such as dry socket, infection, or other issues that may require further evaluation and treatment.
In summary, while some discomfort after wisdom tooth extraction is normal, especially when chewing, it is important to monitor your symptoms. If you have any concerns or if the pain does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider for further assessment. They can provide you with the best guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track.
