Wound healing issues
In early November, I had a car accident that caused abrasions on all four limbs, which have multiple scabs.
I accidentally pulled off some scabs with my clothing, revealing pink new tissue.
However, the tissue is raised.
I would like to know if this raised new tissue will flatten over time, and how can I prevent it from becoming a raised scar?

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
If you are concerned, you can start using scar ointment.

More Info
Raised scars, often referred to as hypertrophic scars or keloids, can develop as part of the natural healing process following an injury, such as abrasions from a car accident. These scars occur when the body produces excess collagen during the healing process, leading to a raised appearance. Understanding how to manage and prevent raised scars is crucial for optimal healing and cosmetic outcomes.
Understanding Raised Scars
1. Types of Raised Scars:
- Hypertrophic Scars: These are raised scars that remain within the boundaries of the original wound. They may become red or dark and can be itchy or painful but often improve over time.
- Keloids: These extend beyond the original wound site and can continue to grow over time. Keloids are more common in individuals with darker skin tones and can be more challenging to treat.
2. Healing Process: After an injury, the body goes through several stages of healing:
- Inflammation: This phase lasts a few days and is characterized by redness, swelling, and pain.
- Proliferation: New tissue forms, and collagen is produced, which can lead to raised scars if excessive.
- Maturation: This phase can last for months to years, during which the scar may flatten and fade.
Will the Raised Scar Go Away?
The raised scar may improve over time, but it may not completely disappear. Factors influencing the healing process include the depth and size of the wound, individual skin type, and genetic predisposition to scarring. While some raised scars may flatten and fade, others may remain prominent.
Prevention Tips
1. Keep the Wound Moist: Applying a silicone gel or ointment can help keep the scar hydrated, which may reduce the likelihood of it becoming raised. Silicone sheets are also effective in flattening raised scars.
2. Avoid Sun Exposure: Protect the healing area from sun exposure, as UV rays can darken scars and make them more noticeable. Use sunscreen with a high SPF on the scar once it has healed sufficiently.
3. Gentle Massage: Once the wound has healed, gently massaging the scar with a moisturizing lotion can help break down collagen fibers and improve the scar's appearance.
4. Avoid Tension on the Scar: If possible, avoid activities that put tension on the scar, as this can exacerbate its raised appearance. For example, if the scar is on a joint, consider using a splint or bandage to limit movement.
5. Consult a Dermatologist: If you are concerned about the raised scar, consider consulting a dermatologist. They may recommend treatments such as corticosteroid injections, laser therapy, or other interventions to help flatten the scar.
6. Use Pressure Garments: In some cases, wearing pressure garments can help flatten raised scars, especially for larger areas or after surgeries.
Conclusion
In summary, while raised scars may improve over time, they may not completely disappear. Taking proactive steps to manage the healing process can significantly impact the final appearance of the scar. Keeping the area moisturized, protecting it from the sun, and consulting with a healthcare professional for tailored advice can help you achieve the best possible outcome. If you notice any changes in the scar or experience discomfort, seeking medical advice is always a prudent choice.
