Menstrual issues
Hello, I started my menstrual period in July after giving birth in May.
My periods in July and August were quite heavy, but by September, the flow decreased significantly until the end of the cycle.
I had an ultrasound at Chang Gung Hospital in early November, and the doctor said everything was fine.
This month in December, my menstrual flow is still very light.
My height is 152 cm, and my weight is 38 kg.
Could this be related to my low weight? I have not been intimate with my husband.
I plan to try to conceive again in the future; will this have any impact on my next pregnancy?
Mo Mo, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/01

Hello, being underweight or overweight can potentially cause menstrual irregularities.
If your menstrual cycle is still regular, it is advisable to monitor the situation, as it generally does not affect fertility.
Wishing you good health.

After giving birth, many women experience changes in their menstrual cycles, which can lead to concerns about their reproductive health and future pregnancies. In your case, it seems that you have noticed a significant change in your menstrual flow since your pregnancy, with heavier periods initially and then a decrease in flow over the following months. This is not uncommon, as hormonal fluctuations after childbirth can greatly affect menstrual cycles.
The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. After childbirth, it can take some time for these hormone levels to stabilize, especially if you are not breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can suppress ovulation and lead to irregular periods or even amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation) for some time. If you are not breastfeeding, your body may return to its pre-pregnancy hormonal patterns more quickly, but this process can vary widely among women.
Your concern about the light flow in your recent periods could be related to several factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, or even your body weight. At a height of 152 cm and a weight of 38 kg, you are classified as underweight according to most BMI (Body Mass Index) charts. Being underweight can affect your menstrual cycle, as low body fat can lead to lower estrogen levels, which can result in lighter periods or irregular cycles. It is essential to maintain a healthy weight to support reproductive health, especially if you are planning to conceive again.
Regarding your question about whether these changes could affect your future pregnancies, it is possible. Irregular menstrual cycles can indicate underlying hormonal issues that may affect ovulation. If you are not ovulating regularly, it could make it more challenging to conceive. However, many women with irregular cycles can still become pregnant, and once you achieve a healthier weight and your hormones stabilize, your menstrual cycle may normalize, improving your chances of conception.
It is also worth noting that if your periods continue to be irregular or if you experience other symptoms such as significant weight loss, fatigue, or changes in appetite, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels or other assessments to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while changes in your menstrual cycle after pregnancy can be concerning, they are often a normal part of the postpartum experience. Maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, and allowing your body time to adjust can help regulate your menstrual cycle. If you have ongoing concerns or if your menstrual patterns do not improve, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is recommended to ensure your reproductive health is on track for future pregnancies.
