How much longer will it take to return to normal?

I have been experiencing insomnia for three months after discontinuing Lorazepam, which I had been taking for over three months.
This insomnia is not caused by autonomic nervous system dysfunction; my symptoms related to autonomic dysregulation are limited to stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Interestingly, after stopping Lorazepam, my stomach pain symptoms have significantly decreased.
Before taking Lorazepam, I never experienced insomnia.
The doctor who initially prescribed Lorazepam told me that taking it for a lifetime would not cause any issues.
However, my current doctor is unsure why my previous doctor recommended long-term use of Lorazepam.
He mentioned that there are many alternative medications available.

I am uncertain how long the insomnia after discontinuation will last.
I tapered off the medication over three weeks before stopping completely, and I wonder if that was too quick.
Currently, I am taking one-third of the doses of Dong Jian and Lexapro, but I can only sleep for 2 to 3 hours before waking up.
Although I can lie down and fall back asleep for a bit, I feel increasingly fatigued, and I lack energy during the day.
The doctor I am currently seeing believes that my condition will gradually improve, so he prescribed lighter medications, but I am unsure how long it will take to return to my previous state.

I have read some information online stating that discontinuation can lead to poor sleep in the latter half of the night, which may persist for months or even years.
Seeing this makes me question how much longer I can endure this situation or if I should return to taking Lorazepam.
I hope the doctor can provide me with some answers, and I would be very grateful.

Hello, after discontinuing lorazepam, the insomnia that occurs may have other possibilities, such as an exacerbation of anxiety symptoms during that period, which can trigger insomnia.
Later, if no anxiolytic medication is used, it naturally leads to the emergence of anxiety and insomnia symptoms.
Some data indicate that withdrawal symptoms (including anxiety and insomnia) after stopping lorazepam may last for 10-14 days, as seen in the following link: https://americanaddictioncenters.org/ativan-treatment/withdrawal-timeline.
Insomnia beyond that timeframe may also be influenced by individual constitution, stress, and psychological factors, making it difficult to determine a causal relationship.
It is recommended to work closely with your current physician for proper treatment and discuss any concerns with them.
Alternatively, you may seek assistance from a specialist in addiction psychiatry.
Thank you.

Recovering from insomnia after discontinuing Lorazepam can be a challenging process, and the timeline for recovery can vary significantly from person to person. Based on your description, you have been experiencing insomnia for three months after stopping Lorazepam, which you had taken for over three months. It’s important to understand that withdrawal symptoms, including insomnia, can manifest in different ways and for varying durations depending on several factors, including the duration of use, dosage, individual physiology, and any underlying mental health conditions.

Typically, withdrawal symptoms from benzodiazepines like Lorazepam can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Most acute withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety and insomnia, may peak within the first two weeks after stopping the medication. However, some individuals may experience prolonged symptoms, known as protracted withdrawal syndrome, which can last for months or even years. This is particularly true if the medication was used for an extended period or at higher doses.

In your case, since you have been off Lorazepam for three months and are still experiencing significant insomnia, it is possible that your body is still adjusting to the absence of the medication. Additionally, the anxiety that may have been initially managed by Lorazepam could be resurfacing, contributing to your sleep difficulties. It’s also worth noting that the body can take time to recalibrate its natural sleep-wake cycle after discontinuing a sedative medication.

You mentioned that you are currently taking lower doses of other medications, such as Dong Jian and Le Xin Ping, which may not be providing the relief you need. It’s crucial to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your ongoing symptoms and the effectiveness of your current treatment plan. They may consider adjusting your medication or exploring alternative therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which has been shown to be effective for many individuals struggling with sleep issues.

In terms of how long it will take to recover to your previous sleep patterns, there is no definitive answer. Some individuals may start to see improvements in their sleep within a few weeks, while others may take several months. It’s essential to be patient with yourself during this process and to focus on implementing good sleep hygiene practices. This includes maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and ensuring your sleep environment is conducive to rest.

If you find that your insomnia persists or worsens, or if you feel that your quality of life is significantly impacted, it may be worth discussing the possibility of reintroducing a benzodiazepine or exploring other medication options with your doctor. While the goal is often to minimize reliance on sedative medications, the priority should be your overall well-being and mental health.

In summary, recovery from Lorazepam withdrawal insomnia can vary widely, and while some may see improvement in a few weeks, others may take months. It’s essential to work closely with your healthcare provider, explore various treatment options, and practice good sleep hygiene to support your recovery.
