Can keeping your eyes closed for too long cause damage to your eyes?

I have often been told that excessive eye strain can harm my eyes, so I started to think in the opposite direction.
I wondered if keeping my eyes closed for an extended period could be beneficial for eye health.
I tried to keep my eyes closed for two whole days, but after some careful consideration, I realized that this might be unusual.
