Side effects of antidepressants?

Hello doctor, I just finished taking my depression medication at the clinic, and I'm experiencing nausea as a side effect from Fluxen 20mg capsules.
How can I alleviate this? I feel like vomiting but can't.

Eason, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/08

Dr. Weng Yiji reply Pharmacology

Good day: If you are taking Clomipramine capsules for the first time, you may experience nausea (the sensation of wanting to vomit without being able to) in the first few days before starting the medication.
It is recommended that you drink plenty of warm water after taking the medication and keep your upper body upright; do not lie down immediately.
Theoretically, this nausea (the sensation of wanting to vomit without being able to) should decrease as you continue to take the medication.
If this symptom does not improve after 3-5 days of taking the medication, it is advisable to return for a follow-up appointment and inform your physician.

Managing nausea, especially when it is a side effect of medication like Fluxen (Fluoxetine), can be challenging and uncomfortable. Here are some strategies that may help alleviate your nausea:
1. Timing of Medication: If you are taking Fluxen on an empty stomach, consider taking it with food. Eating a small snack or meal before taking your medication can sometimes help reduce nausea. However, avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy foods that might exacerbate the feeling of nausea.

2. Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial. Sip on clear fluids like water, ginger ale, or herbal teas (like ginger or peppermint tea) which are known for their soothing properties. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages as they can worsen nausea.

3. Ginger: Ginger is a natural remedy known for its anti-nausea properties. You can consume ginger tea, ginger ale (with real ginger), or ginger candies.
4. Small, Frequent Meals: Instead of three large meals, try eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. This can help keep your stomach from feeling too full or too empty, both of which can trigger nausea.

5. Avoid Strong Odors: Strong smells can trigger nausea. Try to stay in well-ventilated areas and avoid cooking or eating foods with strong odors.

6. Rest and Relaxation: Sometimes, simply lying down in a quiet, dark room can help ease nausea. Try to keep your head elevated and avoid sudden movements.

7. Deep Breathing Exercises: Engaging in deep breathing exercises can help calm your body and reduce feelings of nausea. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth.

8. Over-the-Counter Remedies: If your nausea persists, you might consider over-the-counter medications like meclizine or dimenhydrinate, but consult your healthcare provider before taking any additional medications.

9. Consult Your Doctor: If nausea continues to be a significant issue, it’s essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may adjust your dosage or suggest an alternative medication that may have fewer side effects.

10. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of when your nausea occurs and any other symptoms you experience. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.

It's important to remember that while nausea can be a common side effect of medications like Fluxen, it should not be ignored, especially if it significantly impacts your quality of life. If you find that these strategies do not help, or if you experience severe nausea or vomiting, please reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and management. They can provide additional support and may consider alternative treatments for your depression that do not cause nausea as a side effect.
