Redness and swelling with elevation?

You may suddenly experience intense itching on your hands, followed by the development of small red, raised welts, which can be as large as 1 cm or as small as 0.3 cm.
The itching occurs only at the moment of swelling, and afterwards, it subsides, although the welts take several days to gradually disappear (starting the day after sexual intercourse).
What could be causing this? It feels similar to insect bites, with 1 to 3 new swollen areas appearing daily, primarily at night, and mostly on the hands, with one instance on the chin.
Occasionally, there is generalized itching without the presence of welts.

More Info

The sudden appearance of itchy bumps on the skin, particularly after an event like sexual intercourse, can be concerning and may have several potential causes. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing localized allergic reactions or possibly hives (urticaria), which are characterized by raised, itchy welts on the skin that can vary in size and can appear suddenly.

Possible Causes:
1. Allergic Reactions: One of the most common causes of sudden itchy bumps is an allergic reaction to something that has come into contact with your skin. This could be due to a variety of allergens, including:
- Personal Care Products: Lotions, soaps, or lubricants used during intercourse may contain ingredients that trigger an allergic response.

- Latex Allergies: If condoms were used, a latex allergy could cause localized swelling and itching.

- Environmental Allergens: Pollen, dust mites, or pet dander could also cause similar reactions, especially if you have been in a new environment.

2. Insect Bites: The description of the bumps resembling insect bites is also plausible. Mosquitoes, fleas, or other insects can cause localized swelling and itching. If you have been outdoors or in an area where insects are prevalent, this could be a likely cause.

3. Hives (Urticaria): Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly and may be triggered by various factors, including stress, food, medications, or infections. They can last for a few hours to several days and may come and go.

4. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or contact dermatitis could also lead to itchy bumps. These conditions can flare up due to irritants or allergens and may require specific treatments.

5. Infections: Although less common, certain infections (like viral infections) can cause skin reactions, including itchy bumps. If you notice other symptoms such as fever, fatigue, or widespread rash, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider.

Recommendations for Management:
1. Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting to scratch the itchy bumps, doing so can lead to further irritation or infection. Instead, try to keep the area cool and apply a cold compress to alleviate itching.

2. Over-the-Counter Antihistamines: Medications like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or cetirizine (Zyrtec) can help reduce itching and swelling associated with allergic reactions or hives.

3. Topical Treatments: Applying hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion can help soothe the skin and reduce inflammation.

4. Identify Triggers: Keep a diary of when the bumps appear and any potential triggers (foods, activities, products used) to help identify what might be causing the reactions.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the bumps persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other symptoms (such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or fever), seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider can perform tests to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

In conclusion, while the sudden appearance of itchy bumps can be alarming, understanding the potential causes can help you manage the symptoms effectively. If the issue continues or escalates, professional medical advice is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
