Bleeding issues
Hello Doctor, my last menstrual period started on November 18, and on December 1, I noticed a small amount of blood in my discharge.
Three days later, it turned into pinkish blood resembling egg white, and the amount increased to what is similar to the first day of my period.
This has continued until today (December 10) and is still quite heavy.
I have been taking the medication for over two years, and my menstrual cycle has been very regular.
This is the first time I have experienced this situation, and I am wondering if it could be related to the steroid medication I am using, which may have caused a hormonal imbalance.
I visited a gynecologist who performed an internal examination and said that my vagina and uterus are normal.
Should I take additional contraceptive measures? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

Abnormal bleeding can be a concerning issue for many women, and understanding its causes is crucial for addressing any underlying health concerns. Based on your description, it appears that you have experienced unusual bleeding that began with a small amount of blood-streaked discharge and progressed to a more significant flow resembling the first day of your menstrual period. This situation can be perplexing, especially since you have been on a consistent birth control regimen for over two years, which typically helps regulate menstrual cycles.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that abnormal bleeding can arise from various factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, changes in medication, or even physical conditions affecting the reproductive system. In your case, since you mentioned the use of steroid medications, it is possible that these could contribute to hormonal imbalances. Corticosteroids can influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, potentially leading to irregularities in the menstrual cycle. However, the extent to which this may affect your bleeding patterns can vary significantly from person to person.
The fact that you have been on birth control pills (悦己) for an extended period suggests that your body has adapted to a specific hormonal environment. Birth control pills work by providing a steady dose of hormones, which typically prevents ovulation and regulates the menstrual cycle. However, any changes in your health, lifestyle, or medication can disrupt this balance. Stress, for instance, is a well-known factor that can lead to changes in menstrual patterns, including breakthrough bleeding or spotting.
Given that your gynecologist has performed an internal examination and confirmed that your vagina and uterus appear normal, it is reassuring that there are no immediate signs of serious underlying conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or infections. However, if the abnormal bleeding persists or worsens, it may be prudent to seek further evaluation. This could include hormonal assessments or imaging studies to rule out any other potential causes.
As for your question regarding additional contraceptive measures, if you are currently taking birth control pills consistently and correctly, you should still be protected against pregnancy. However, if you are experiencing breakthrough bleeding, it might be worth discussing with your healthcare provider whether your current method is still the best option for you. Sometimes, switching to a different formulation or method of contraception can help alleviate such issues.
In conclusion, while abnormal bleeding can be alarming, it is often manageable with the right approach. Monitoring your symptoms, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider, and considering lifestyle factors such as stress and medication use can all contribute to better management of your menstrual health. If you continue to experience irregular bleeding, do not hesitate to follow up with your gynecologist for further evaluation and personalized advice.
