Right lower abdominal pain inquiry?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing pain in my lower right abdomen for the past few days.
The pain is located just slightly below the belly button.
It doesn't hurt when I'm sitting or lying down, but it does hurt when I'm standing.
Could you please tell me if there are any organ issues in this area, or could it simply be muscle pain? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Pain related to movement and posture is similar to a strain; local heat application and avoiding local exertion are recommended.
If fever or increased pain occurs, please seek medical attention.

More Info
Right lower abdominal pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment. The area you are describing, located just below the belly button and to the right, is home to several vital organs and structures, including parts of the intestines, the appendix, and in females, the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
One of the most common causes of right lower abdominal pain is appendicitis, which is an inflammation of the appendix. This condition typically presents with sharp pain that begins around the belly button and then shifts to the right lower quadrant. It may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and fever. If you suspect appendicitis, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly, as it can lead to serious complications if not treated.
Other gastrointestinal issues could also be at play. For instance, conditions such as diverticulitis, which is the inflammation of small pouches that can form in the walls of the intestines, can cause localized pain. Similarly, constipation or bowel obstruction can lead to discomfort in the lower abdomen, particularly if there is a buildup of stool.
In females, gynecological issues must also be considered. Ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, or pelvic inflammatory disease can present with right lower abdominal pain. If you are of reproductive age and sexually active, these conditions should be ruled out, especially if you experience any additional symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, abnormal vaginal discharge, or changes in urinary habits.
Muscle strain is another possibility, particularly if you have recently engaged in physical activity that may have overexerted the abdominal or pelvic muscles. However, muscle pain typically worsens with movement and may be more localized to the area of strain.
Given that you mentioned the pain occurs primarily when standing and not when sitting or lying down, this could suggest a mechanical issue, such as a muscle or ligament strain, or even a hernia, which can cause discomfort when pressure is applied to the abdominal wall.
Anxiety and stress can also exacerbate physical symptoms, including abdominal pain. The mind-body connection is significant, and psychological factors can lead to or worsen physical discomfort. If you are experiencing heightened anxiety, it may be beneficial to address these concerns with a healthcare professional.
In summary, right lower abdominal pain can arise from various causes, including appendicitis, gastrointestinal issues, gynecological conditions, muscle strain, or even stress-related factors. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, and laboratory tests to determine the underlying cause of your pain and guide appropriate treatment.
