Exposure to Bleach Fumes: Symptoms and When to Seek Medical Help - Pulmonology

Inhaled fumes from bleach?

While cleaning the bathroom in the evening, I accidentally mixed bleach with other cleaning agents, resulting in inhalation of excessive irritating gases.
I immediately rinsed off the cleaning agents with cold water, but I experienced symptoms such as coughing, vomiting, dizziness, runny nose, phlegm in the throat, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and pain in the lungs and heart with deep breaths.
Later, my heart rate was measured at 108 beats per minute.
Am I experiencing poisoning? Do I need to seek medical attention?

Wanzi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/12/22

Dr. Zhang Ziyan reply Pulmonology

Hello Ms.
Wan, the actual situation depends on the composition of the cleaning agent that was mixed with the bleach (brand, product name).
Please consult a toxicology department.
Additionally, if you continue to experience wheezing, difficulty breathing, or if your symptoms worsen, please seek medical attention.
Sincerely, the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Changhua Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

Exposure to bleach fumes can be quite serious, especially when mixed with other cleaning agents, as it can produce harmful gases that irritate the respiratory system and other bodily functions. The symptoms you are experiencing—coughing, vomiting, dizziness, nasal discharge, throat phlegm, difficulty breathing, and chest pain—are concerning and indicate that you may have been exposed to a toxic environment.

When bleach is mixed with ammonia or other cleaning products, it can create chloramine vapors or chlorine gas, both of which can lead to respiratory distress and other serious health issues. The immediate symptoms you described are classic signs of chemical exposure and can escalate quickly. The elevated heart rate (tachycardia) you mentioned, with a pulse of 108 beats per minute, can be a response to stress, anxiety, or a direct reaction to the inhalation of toxic fumes.

In situations like this, it is crucial to take the following steps:
1. Immediate Action: If you have not already done so, move to an area with fresh air immediately. This is the first and most important step to reduce further exposure to the harmful fumes.

2. Hydration: Drink water to help flush out any toxins and soothe your throat, but avoid anything that might irritate your stomach further if you are feeling nauseous.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a close watch on your symptoms. If they worsen or if you experience severe difficulty breathing, chest pain, or persistent vomiting, seek medical attention immediately.

4. When to Seek Help: You should seek medical help if:
- You experience severe difficulty breathing or wheezing.

- Your heart rate remains elevated or you feel faint.

- You have persistent chest pain or pressure.

- Your symptoms do not improve after moving to fresh air.

- You experience confusion, severe headache, or loss of consciousness.

5. Medical Evaluation: A healthcare professional may perform a physical examination, check your oxygen levels, and possibly conduct a chest X-ray or other tests to assess the extent of your exposure and any potential damage to your lungs or other organs.

In summary, while your symptoms may be manageable, the combination of inhaling bleach fumes and the other cleaning agents you mixed poses a risk of chemical exposure that should not be taken lightly. Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it is advisable to seek medical attention to ensure your safety and well-being. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to potential chemical exposure.
