When will edema resolve?

I had a circumcision a year ago, and I still feel discomfort in the glans when it comes into contact with friction.
There is also a ring-like area beneath the glans that resembles a donut (I described it this way because I think of delicious food 🤭).
I initially thought it would heal on its own if I left it alone, but it has been a long time, and I’m wondering if I definitely need to see a doctor.
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to read and respond!

Hello: Edema is often due to poor circulation after surgery.
If the scarring is not severe, the edema will mostly resolve on its own, but it may take some time.
If the scarring is more significant, it will take longer to improve.
It is recommended to return for a follow-up appointment.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing a circumcision, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some degree of discomfort or sensitivity, especially in the initial healing period. However, if you have been experiencing persistent discomfort for a year, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Here are several reasons why you should consider consulting a healthcare professional:
1. Persistent Discomfort: If the discomfort has lasted for an extended period, it may indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Normal healing should not take this long, and persistent pain could be a sign of complications such as infection, scarring, or nerve damage.

2. Sensitivity and Irritation: The sensitivity of the glans (the head of the penis) can be heightened after circumcision, but if this sensitivity is causing significant discomfort during normal activities, it may require evaluation. The "ring" you mentioned around the glans could be a result of the healing process, but it could also indicate a condition known as "meatal stenosis" or other forms of irritation that may need treatment.

3. Infection: Symptoms such as redness, swelling, discharge, or increased pain could indicate an infection. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical help promptly.

4. Scar Tissue Formation: Sometimes, circumcision can lead to the formation of scar tissue, which may cause discomfort or sensitivity. A healthcare provider can assess whether this is the case and discuss potential treatment options.

5. Psychological Impact: Persistent discomfort can also lead to anxiety or distress, affecting your quality of life. Speaking with a healthcare professional can provide reassurance and help address any psychological concerns related to your condition.

6. Treatment Options: A medical professional can offer various treatment options based on the underlying cause of your discomfort. This may include topical treatments, medications to manage pain, or, in some cases, surgical intervention if necessary.

7. Preventing Future Issues: By consulting a healthcare provider, you can also receive guidance on proper care and hygiene practices to prevent future complications.

In summary, while some discomfort can be expected after circumcision, persistent issues warrant a medical evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health. A healthcare professional can provide a thorough examination, determine the cause of your discomfort, and recommend appropriate treatment options. Don't hesitate to reach out for help; your well-being is important.
