Questions about wearing orthokeratology lenses?

Hello, doctor.
I have two questions I would like to ask you:
1.
I have been wearing orthokeratology lenses for nearly ten years.
I’m not sure when it started, but after wearing them for more than six hours, my vision becomes somewhat blurry.
Interestingly, I have experienced clearer vision after wearing them for only three hours! I asked the doctor who fitted my lenses, and they thought it was just because I wore them too long, but isn’t it usually recommended to wear them for at least eight hours for optimal results? My friends who also wear them don’t have this issue, and they are quite surprised! What could be the reason for this? Could it be that my prescription has decreased, making the lenses too strong for me?
2.
I always use Boston Simplus solution when wearing my lenses, but I often end up getting some on my eyelids, which causes a prickly itch.
This issue has been persistent, and if I wipe it off, the itching goes away.
I have sensitive skin on my face, so I wonder if my skin is allergic to the ingredients in the solution? However, my eyes themselves do not seem to be allergic! I have been dealing with these issues for a long time and cannot figure out the cause.
I hope to receive a professional explanation.
Thank you.

Hello Ms.
Chen: It is possible that your prescription is no longer suitable.
If this is the case, you should have your prescription re-evaluated.
The itching may be caused by sensitivity to the ingredients.
If it goes away after wiping it off, it should not be a major concern.
If it continues to bother you, you may need to try a different option.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for your questions regarding your experience with orthokeratology lenses. It's important to address these issues as they can significantly affect your comfort and vision quality. Let's break down your concerns one by one.

1. Blurred Vision After Extended Wear: It's not uncommon for individuals wearing orthokeratology lenses to experience changes in vision clarity after prolonged use. The primary function of these lenses is to reshape the cornea to correct refractive errors, and they typically require a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of wear to achieve optimal results. However, if you are noticing that your vision becomes blurry after wearing the lenses for more than 6 hours, it could be due to several factors.
One possibility is that your cornea may not be responding as expected to the lens shape, which can happen if your prescription has changed over time. If your refractive error has decreased, the lenses may be too strong for your current needs, leading to suboptimal vision. Additionally, factors such as lens fit, tear film stability, and even environmental conditions can affect how well the lenses perform. It would be advisable to revisit your eye care professional to assess your current prescription and lens fit to ensure they are still appropriate for your eyes.

2. Discomfort from Boston Soothing Solution: The discomfort you experience with the Boston Soothing Solution could indeed be related to your skin sensitivity. While your eyes may not show signs of allergic reactions, the ingredients in the solution could irritate the skin around your eyes, especially if they come into contact with your eyelids. It’s essential to apply the solution carefully to avoid excess contact with your skin.
If you suspect that your skin is reacting to the solution, you might consider switching to a preservative-free lubricant or a different brand of eye drops that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Always consult with your eye care provider before making any changes to your eye care regimen. They can recommend alternatives that are less likely to cause irritation while still providing the necessary moisture for your lenses.

In summary, both of your concerns warrant further evaluation by your eye care professional. Changes in vision clarity after extended wear of orthokeratology lenses can indicate a need for a prescription update or a reassessment of lens fit. Additionally, skin irritation from the soothing solution can often be managed by switching products or adjusting your application technique.
It’s crucial to maintain regular follow-ups with your eye care provider, especially after wearing orthokeratology lenses for an extended period, to ensure that your vision remains clear and your eye health is protected. Thank you for reaching out with your questions, and I hope this information helps clarify your concerns.
