Flashes of light when blinking one eye in a dark environment?
Hello doctor, I have floaters, and I noticed that when I close one eye in a dark place, I see fireworks-like flashes in the other eye, but it doesn't happen much in bright areas.
Three months ago, I had an examination, and the doctor said there were no issues.
Is this a normal condition? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: I have answered this three times before, and you may not have seen it, so I will explain it again.
This is likely due to traction on the retina causing the flashes.
If this has been occurring for three months and previous examinations showed no issues and there have been no significant changes, it should not be a concern.
However, if the flashes have started recently, I recommend getting another examination for your peace of mind.

Flashes of light in one eye, especially when accompanied by floaters, can be concerning and often prompts patients to seek medical advice. In your case, having floaters (known as myodesopsia) along with the experience of seeing fireworks-like flashes of light in a dark environment is not uncommon, particularly for individuals with a history of floaters. However, it is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential implications of these symptoms.
Floaters are typically caused by changes in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, the vitreous can become more liquid and may pull away from the retina, leading to the perception of floaters. This is a common occurrence and is often benign. However, when the vitreous pulls away, it can sometimes exert traction on the retina, leading to the phenomenon known as "photopsia," or flashes of light. These flashes can appear as brief bursts of light, often described as fireworks or lightning, and are usually more noticeable in low-light conditions.
The fact that you are experiencing these flashes primarily in a dark environment is consistent with how our eyes adapt to light. In darkness, the retina is more sensitive, and any mechanical stimulation (like the vitreous tugging on the retina) can result in the perception of light. This is why you might notice these flashes more when your eye is closed in a dark room compared to when you are in a well-lit environment.
It is reassuring that you had an eye examination three months ago, and your doctor found no issues. Regular check-ups are crucial, especially if you notice any changes in your symptoms. If the flashes of light become more frequent, persistent, or are accompanied by a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow in your vision, or any loss of vision, it is imperative to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, which require prompt intervention.
In summary, while experiencing flashes of light in conjunction with floaters can be a normal occurrence, particularly in the context of vitreous changes, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your symptoms. Continue to monitor your condition, and do not hesitate to consult your eye care professional if you have any concerns. Regular eye examinations are key to ensuring your ocular health, especially as you age or if you have pre-existing conditions like high myopia, which can increase the risk of retinal issues.
