Dark green stools?
Hello: After eating seafood, I suddenly had deep green stools, which I haven't experienced before.
Additionally, the stools have a very foul odor, whereas my previous stools were normal and did not have a bad smell.
Could this be due to eating contaminated seafood? Also, sometimes I notice mucus in my stools, although it doesn't happen often.
Is this normal? Thank you.

Hello: This is likely caused by consuming contaminated food.
Fortunately, there is no bacterial infection yet; otherwise, it could lead to acute gastroenteritis.
As for occasionally having stools that contain mucus, it usually indicates some inflammation in the intestines.
However, if this occurs frequently, necessary examinations must be conducted to determine if there are any intestinal pathologies.
Best wishes for your health from Dr.

More Info
Experiencing dark green stool after consuming seafood can indeed raise concerns, especially if this is a new occurrence for you. The color and odor of your stool can be influenced by various factors, including your diet, hydration levels, and overall gastrointestinal health.
Firstly, the dark green color of your stool could be attributed to several dietary factors. Consuming foods that are high in iron, such as certain types of seafood, can lead to darker stool. Additionally, if you have eaten foods that contain green pigments, such as spinach or other leafy greens, this could also contribute to the color change. Seafood, particularly shellfish, can sometimes contain high levels of iron, which may explain the change in stool color.
However, if you suspect that the seafood you consumed was not clean or properly cooked, this could also lead to gastrointestinal issues. Contaminated seafood can harbor bacteria or parasites that may cause foodborne illnesses, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The foul odor of your stool could indicate the presence of undigested food or an imbalance in your gut flora, possibly due to an infection or irritation in your gastrointestinal tract.
The presence of mucus in your stool can also be a sign of inflammation in the intestines. While occasional mucus is generally not a cause for concern, if it becomes frequent or is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, or blood in the stool, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or infections can lead to increased mucus production.
In summary, while the dark green color and foul odor of your stool may be related to your recent seafood consumption, it is essential to consider other factors such as your overall diet and any accompanying symptoms. If the changes in your stool persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms like abdominal pain or diarrhea, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend stool tests or other diagnostic procedures to rule out any underlying conditions.
In the meantime, ensure that you stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet. If you continue to consume seafood, make sure it is sourced from reputable suppliers and cooked thoroughly to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. Keeping a food diary may also help you identify any specific foods that trigger changes in your stool, allowing you to make informed dietary choices in the future.
