Menstrual delay

Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle averages 26-28 days, and it tends to come early when I'm under stress.
My last period started on December 3rd, and I had sexual intercourse on December 17th.
I took a pregnancy test two weeks after intercourse, and both tests showed one line.
My period still hasn't arrived.
On January 7th, I went for an examination, and the ultrasound showed no issues.
I took three days of medication to induce my period and received an injection to help induce menstruation, but as of today (January 13th), my period still hasn't come.
Additionally, I've been feeling bloated in my lower abdomen since my period was delayed, and I've noticed an increase in discharge.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant?

Fang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/01/12

Hello, based on your description, there may not be specific symptoms in the early stages of pregnancy, and subjective symptoms cannot be used to make a determination.
It is recommended that if your menstrual period does not arrive by around the 1st to 17th, you should consult a physician for further evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of anxiety and confusion, especially when considering the possibility of pregnancy. In your case, you have a regular menstrual cycle averaging 26-28 days, and you experienced a delay after having unprotected intercourse on December 17. You mentioned that you took a pregnancy test two weeks later, which returned negative results. Additionally, you underwent an ultrasound that showed no abnormalities, and you were prescribed medication to induce menstruation, but as of January 13, your period has not yet arrived.

There are several factors to consider in your situation. First, it is important to understand that a negative pregnancy test, especially when taken two weeks after potential conception, is generally reliable. However, false negatives can occur, particularly if the test is taken too early or if the hormone levels are not yet high enough to be detected. If you suspect you might still be pregnant, it could be beneficial to wait a few more days and retest or consult with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect lower levels of hCG (the hormone produced during pregnancy) than home urine tests.

The symptoms you are experiencing, such as abdominal bloating and increased discharge, can be attributed to various factors. Stress is a significant contributor to menstrual irregularities, and it can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay your period. Other potential causes for a delayed period include changes in weight, exercise habits, or underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders.

The medications you took to induce menstruation may also affect your body. Hormonal treatments can sometimes take time to work, and it is not uncommon for the menstrual cycle to be temporarily disrupted after taking such medications. If your period does not arrive soon, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider whether further evaluation is needed to rule out any underlying issues.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given your circumstances, the negative tests and ultrasound findings suggest that it may be less likely. However, the symptoms you are experiencing warrant further investigation. If your period does not start soon, or if you continue to have symptoms that concern you, I recommend following up with your healthcare provider. They can offer additional testing and support to help you understand what might be happening with your body and provide guidance on the next steps. Remember, it is always better to seek medical advice when you have concerns about your health.
