After receiving the COVID-19 vaccine
Hello, Doctor Huang! I have a few questions for you, and I appreciate your time in answering them: Three weeks ago, I received my second dose of the BNT vaccine.
A week later, I suddenly experienced palpitations in the morning, which improved after about 10 minutes.
Since then, I have been experiencing palpitations almost every 1 to 2 days, similar to a feeling of anxiety.
Recently, I often feel my heart beating strongly, and I can clearly feel my heartbeat when I touch my chest.
I have also occasionally felt a sensation of something stuck in my throat, along with bloating in my stomach.
Additionally, I have been experiencing shoulder pain, dizziness, chest pain, and pain in my left back, neck, and left armpit, which has caused me to feel anxious and unable to sleep.
What do you think this could be? Is it necessary for me to seek medical attention? Thank you for your response.

Post-vaccine heart palpitations can be concerning, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, shoulder discomfort, and anxiety. It’s important to understand that while some individuals may experience heart-related symptoms after vaccination, these symptoms can also arise from various other causes, including anxiety, stress, or even gastrointestinal issues.
In your case, the heart palpitations you describe—feeling your heart racing or pounding—are not uncommon after receiving a vaccine, particularly in younger individuals. This can be attributed to several factors, including the body's immune response to the vaccine, which can sometimes lead to transient changes in heart rhythm or increased awareness of heartbeats. The fact that your palpitations improve after a short duration (around 10 minutes) is also a reassuring sign, as it suggests that the symptoms may be more related to anxiety or a temporary physiological response rather than a serious cardiac event.
However, the additional symptoms you mentioned—such as throat discomfort, bloating, shoulder pain, dizziness, and chest pain—warrant careful consideration. These symptoms could potentially indicate a range of issues, from anxiety and stress-related disorders to musculoskeletal pain or even gastrointestinal problems. For instance, bloating and discomfort in the throat could suggest gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is known to cause chest discomfort and can sometimes mimic cardiac symptoms.
Given the complexity of your symptoms and their impact on your daily life, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, an electrocardiogram (EKG), and possibly other tests such as blood work or imaging studies to rule out any underlying cardiac conditions. It’s also important to discuss your anxiety and sleep disturbances with your doctor, as these can significantly affect your overall well-being and may require management.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to the vaccine, they could also stem from other causes. It is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive assessment and guide you on the appropriate next steps. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to heart health, especially if you are experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms.
