Can I take tetracycline after neck lipoma surgery if the stitches have not been removed yet?

Dear Dr.
Wu,
I underwent a sebaceous cyst surgery on my neck on January 18, and my stitches are scheduled to be removed on January 26.
However, on January 22, I visited a dermatologist due to a cyst in my chin area, and the dermatologist prescribed tetracycline for me (as well as an injection commonly referred to as a "cyst injection").
I did not specifically mention to him that I had recently undergone cyst surgery, as I thought it was unrelated to my visit to the dermatologist and I didn't want to take up his time with what I considered small talk.
After returning home, I googled tetracycline and discovered that it is advised to avoid sunlight or strong light exposure while taking it.
However, upon reviewing the medication leaflet, it seems there is no mention of avoiding tetracycline in the presence of a surgical wound from a cyst.
Given that I had neck cyst surgery and my stitches have not yet been removed, is it safe for me to take tetracycline? I have already taken one dose and am unsure whether I should stop taking it immediately.
I'm concerned about antibiotic resistance if I stop, but I'm also worried about the potential impact on the healing of my wound.
Thank you, Dr.
Wu.

After undergoing neck cyst surgery, it is understandable to have concerns about the medications prescribed, especially when it comes to antibiotics like tetracycline. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is often used to treat various bacterial infections, including those related to skin conditions. However, there are several considerations to keep in mind regarding its use post-surgery.

Firstly, tetracycline is known to cause photosensitivity, which means that it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and increase the risk of sunburn. This is particularly important to consider if your surgical site is exposed to sunlight. While the primary concern with tetracycline is its interaction with sunlight, it does not have a direct contraindication with surgical wounds or stitches. However, it is always best to exercise caution.

In your case, since you had a cyst removed from your neck and the stitches are still in place, the primary concern would be the healing process of the surgical site. Tetracycline does not typically affect wound healing negatively, but it is important to monitor the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Regarding your concern about antibiotic resistance, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, unless directed otherwise by your physician. Stopping an antibiotic prematurely can contribute to the development of resistant bacteria, which can complicate future treatments. If you are worried about the potential impact of tetracycline on your surgical site, it would be advisable to consult with your surgeon or the prescribing physician. They can provide guidance based on your specific situation and the condition of your wound.

Additionally, if you are concerned about the potential for discoloration of the wound, it is worth noting that tetracycline can sometimes cause staining of the teeth in children and may affect bone growth, but these effects are not typically a concern for adults. The primary focus should be on ensuring that the wound heals properly and that you do not develop any complications from the surgery.

In summary, while tetracycline can be taken after neck cyst surgery, it is essential to monitor your surgical site for any signs of infection and to protect it from excessive sun exposure. If you have any doubts or experience any adverse effects, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further advice. They can help you weigh the benefits of continuing the antibiotic against any potential risks related to your recent surgery. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure the best outcomes for your recovery.
