How to remove calluses?

Hello! Due to playing sports, I have developed calluses on my skin.
Initially, the area of the calluses on my hands and feet was relatively small, but due to cracking, I have been trimming them with nail clippers.
This vicious cycle has continued for six to seven years, and now the size of the calluses has increased, requiring trimming almost every week.
I would like to ask the doctor how to treat the calluses.
Should I use medications like clotrimazole or salicylic acid?

This is caused by chronic repetitive friction and is a form of self-protective mechanism of the body.

Calluses, or thickened areas of skin that develop in response to repeated friction or pressure, are common among individuals who engage in activities such as sports, manual labor, or even wearing ill-fitting shoes. They serve as a protective mechanism for the skin, but when they become excessively thick or cracked, they can lead to discomfort and even pain. Your situation, where you have been trimming calluses for years, has likely led to a cycle of thickening and cracking that can be difficult to break.

To effectively manage and remove calluses, here are some strategies and tips:
1. Moisturization: Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial. Use a thick moisturizer or cream specifically designed for feet or hands, preferably one that contains urea or lactic acid, as these ingredients help to soften and exfoliate thickened skin. Apply the moisturizer after bathing or showering when the skin is still damp for better absorption.

2. Soaking: Regularly soak your hands or feet in warm, soapy water for about 10-15 minutes. This helps to soften the callused skin, making it easier to remove. After soaking, gently exfoliate the area with a pumice stone or foot file. Be careful not to overdo it, as excessive filing can lead to irritation or injury.

3. Exfoliating Agents: Products containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid can be beneficial. Salicylic acid works by breaking down the bonds between skin cells, helping to slough off the thickened skin. You can find over-the-counter creams or pads that contain these ingredients. However, use them as directed and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

4. Avoid Cutting: While it may be tempting to cut or trim calluses with nail clippers or scissors, this can lead to injury, infection, or further thickening of the skin. Instead, focus on gentle exfoliation and moisturizing.

5. Footwear: Ensure that you are wearing well-fitting shoes that provide adequate support and cushioning. Poorly fitting shoes can exacerbate callus formation. If you play sports, consider using protective padding or specialized footwear designed for your activity.

6. Professional Treatment: If home treatments are not effective, consider visiting a podiatrist or dermatologist. They can provide professional debridement (removal of thickened skin) and may recommend custom orthotics or other interventions to prevent further callus formation.

7. Regular Maintenance: Once you have successfully reduced the size of your calluses, maintain a regular skincare routine to prevent them from returning. This includes regular soaking, moisturizing, and gentle exfoliation.

8. Underlying Conditions: If you notice that your calluses are becoming increasingly painful or if you have other symptoms such as redness, swelling, or discharge, it’s essential to seek medical advice. Sometimes, underlying conditions such as fungal infections or skin disorders can contribute to callus formation.

In summary, managing calluses effectively involves a combination of moisturizing, gentle exfoliation, proper footwear, and possibly the use of topical treatments. Avoid cutting or trimming the calluses, as this can lead to complications. If you find that your efforts are not yielding results, don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment options.

Many acne lesions indicate poor facial metabolism. Using a gentle cleanser to wash your face, avoiding squeezing pimples, and applying glycolic acid gel before bed are more conservative approaches. Glycolic acid peels and blue light therapy are also effective treatments.
