Orthodontics

Hello Doctor,
I would like to ask if I need orthodontic treatment since my teeth are misaligned but I do not have protruding teeth.
Additionally, due to cavities, I need to get dentures.
If I get dentures next month, will it affect the orthodontic treatment if I start it afterward, or should I get the orthodontic treatment first before getting the dentures?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Best regards,
Xiao Yu

Response to Doctor: Huang Ti-Ying
Subject: Orthodontics
Response: Misaligned teeth, even without protrusion, are not ideal for aesthetics and oral hygiene maintenance.
Orthodontic treatment should be considered.
However, prior to orthodontic treatment, dental preparation is necessary, such as tooth extraction or restoration.
If the teeth are significantly damaged and require prosthetics, a temporary denture is typically placed first, and after the orthodontic treatment is completed, impressions are taken to create the final prosthesis.

When considering whether to get braces before or after getting dentures, it's essential to understand the implications of both procedures on your dental health and overall treatment plan. In your case, since you have misaligned teeth but no significant overbite, the decision largely depends on the specific conditions of your teeth and gums, as well as your long-term dental goals.

Understanding the Relationship Between Braces and Dentures
Braces are primarily used to correct the alignment of teeth and improve bite issues. They can help in repositioning teeth to create a more aesthetically pleasing smile and ensure proper function when chewing. On the other hand, dentures are typically used to replace missing teeth, restoring both function and appearance.

Factors to Consider
1. Current Dental Condition: If you have existing cavities or gum disease, these issues should be addressed before starting orthodontic treatment. This is because braces can make it more challenging to maintain oral hygiene, potentially exacerbating existing problems.

2. Treatment Goals: If your primary concern is to replace missing teeth with dentures, you may want to consider how the alignment of your remaining teeth will affect the fit and function of the dentures. If your teeth are significantly misaligned, it might be beneficial to get braces first to ensure that the remaining teeth are in the best position for supporting dentures.

3. Timing: If you opt for braces first, it might take several months to a few years to achieve the desired alignment. Afterward, you can proceed with getting dentures. Conversely, if you get dentures first, you may need to consider how they will fit with your orthodontic treatment. Sometimes, braces can be adjusted to accommodate dentures, but this can complicate the treatment process.

4. Long-Term Stability: Aligning your teeth with braces before getting dentures can lead to better long-term stability of the denture fit. Properly aligned teeth can provide better support for dentures, reducing the risk of movement or discomfort.

5. Consultation with Dental Professionals: It’s crucial to consult with both an orthodontist and a prosthodontist (a dentist specializing in dentures) to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs. They can assess your dental health, discuss your goals, and recommend the best sequence of treatments.

Conclusion
In summary, whether to get braces before or after dentures depends on your specific dental situation. If your teeth are misaligned and you have cavities, it’s advisable to address these issues first, potentially starting with braces. This approach can lead to better outcomes for both your orthodontic and prosthetic treatments. However, if your primary concern is replacing missing teeth and your alignment issues are minor, you might consider getting dentures first, followed by braces later.
Ultimately, the best course of action is to have a thorough discussion with your dental care providers to weigh the pros and cons of each option based on your unique circumstances. This collaborative approach will help ensure that you achieve the best possible results for your dental health and aesthetics.
