Change in stool shape?

Hello Doctor, due to my personal weight issues, I have been controlling my diet recently.
I have been following this for three days: for breakfast, I have either an apple or a large tomato; for lunch, I have a bento box with white meat and vegetables; for dinner, I have vegetables and fruit.
I drink 3000cc of water a day, ride a stationary bike for 30 minutes, and do 10 sit-ups.
Recently, my stool has been dark green or clay-colored, soft, about the thickness of my little finger.
Sometimes I feel like I can't fully empty my bowels, but with a bit of effort, I can pass one or two small pieces of stool, after which I no longer feel incomplete.
However, my stool can be somewhat sticky to the toilet bowl, and I occasionally experience bloating.
(There is a family history of colorectal cancer.)

Hello Mr.
Rouke, due to your family history of colorectal cancer, it is recommended that you schedule a colonoscopy.
If the examination shows no issues, you can feel reassured.
After the examination, if everything is clear, you can ask your physician to prescribe medication to see if it can improve your bowel condition.

Changes in stool color and consistency can be concerning, especially when accompanied by dietary changes and a family history of colorectal cancer. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of dietary adjustments and gastrointestinal symptoms that warrant further exploration.

Firstly, the color of your stool can vary significantly based on what you eat. Dark green or black stools can sometimes result from consuming certain foods, particularly those high in iron, such as dark leafy greens, or from taking iron supplements. Additionally, foods like black licorice or blueberries can also contribute to darker stool colors. On the other hand, a lighter or clay-colored stool may indicate a lack of bile, which can be a sign of liver or gallbladder issues. Given your mention of "土黃色" (earthy yellow), this could also be a result of the high vegetable and fruit intake, which can alter stool color.

The consistency of your stool, described as "soft" and "小拇指粗細" (the thickness of a pinky finger), suggests that you may be experiencing a form of diarrhea or loose stools. This can be influenced by your increased water intake and dietary changes. A high fiber diet, particularly from fruits and vegetables, can lead to softer stools, especially if your body is not used to such a sudden increase in fiber. However, if the stool is consistently loose and accompanied by feelings of incomplete evacuation, it may indicate a gastrointestinal issue such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or even a mild infection.

The sensation of not feeling completely empty after a bowel movement can be frustrating and may be linked to several factors, including diet, stress, or underlying gastrointestinal conditions. The fact that you sometimes pass small, hard stools after straining could indicate that your body is trying to adjust to the changes in your diet and hydration levels.

Given your family history of colorectal cancer, it is essential to be vigilant about any changes in your bowel habits. While dietary changes can lead to temporary alterations in stool color and consistency, persistent changes, especially if accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, significant weight loss, or blood in the stool, should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider. They may recommend a colonoscopy or other diagnostic tests to rule out any serious conditions.

In summary, while your recent dietary changes and increased physical activity are commendable and can lead to improved health outcomes, it is crucial to monitor your gastrointestinal symptoms closely. If the changes in stool color and consistency persist or worsen, or if you experience additional concerning symptoms, please consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Regular screenings and being proactive about your health, especially with a family history of colorectal cancer, are vital steps in maintaining your well-being.
