Brown menstrual blood
Hello Doctor: About two weeks ago, I started noticing brown menstrual discharge (sometimes with clots during showering), but this situation does not occur every day; it is intermittent.
Although the amount is not significant, it varies from suddenly more to suddenly less (and sometimes none at all).
Additionally, sometimes a week after my period, I experience similar brown discharge.
I previously consulted a gynecologist, who mentioned that it was considered intermenstrual bleeding due to poor uterine contractions.
I am unsure if this current situation is similar.
My last period started on the 28th of last month, and I am confused about whether this bleeding is part of my menstrual cycle or intermenstrual bleeding.
I would appreciate your clarification on this matter.
Thank you.

Hello, if the gynecological ultrasound and Pap smear results are normal, it is possible that there is a hormonal imbalance.
If taking the medication prescribed by your doctor does not improve the situation, it is recommended to try using birth control pills for 2-3 months to see if there is any improvement.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Understanding brown menstrual blood can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when it appears unexpectedly or in unusual patterns. The presence of brown blood during menstruation is often a result of older blood being expelled from the body. This can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual cycle, leading to the appearance of brownish discharge.
In your case, the intermittent nature of the brown discharge, along with the presence of blood clots, suggests that there may be a few factors at play. Brown menstrual blood is typically not a cause for alarm, as it is often just a sign that the blood has taken longer to exit the uterus, allowing it to oxidize and turn brown. However, the fact that you are experiencing this discharge intermittently, along with the variations in flow, raises some important considerations.
One potential explanation for the brown discharge you are experiencing could be related to hormonal fluctuations. Hormonal imbalances can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, which may cause unexpected bleeding or spotting between periods. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or even stress can disrupt the normal hormonal balance, leading to changes in your menstrual cycle.
Additionally, the mention of "non-menstrual bleeding" by your gynecologist indicates that there may be other factors contributing to your symptoms. Non-menstrual bleeding can occur due to various reasons, including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, or even infections. These conditions can cause the uterus to shed its lining irregularly, leading to unexpected bleeding or spotting.
The fact that you sometimes experience brown discharge a week after your period could suggest that your body is still shedding old blood, or it could be a sign of a hormonal imbalance. It is also important to consider the possibility of ovulation bleeding, which can occur in some individuals around the midpoint of their cycle. This type of bleeding is usually light and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as mild cramping.
If you are experiencing significant changes in your menstrual cycle, such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or prolonged irregularities, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, including blood tests to check hormone levels, an ultrasound to assess the uterus and ovaries, or other diagnostic procedures to rule out underlying conditions.
In summary, while brown menstrual blood is often not a cause for concern, the irregular patterns you are experiencing warrant further investigation. Keeping a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, including the timing, flow, and any accompanying symptoms, can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your symptoms. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
