Delayed menstruation?

Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle is usually about 28-30 days.
I was supposed to start on January 28, and on that day, I had unprotected intercourse with my boyfriend but he withdrew before ejaculation.
Now it is four days late.
I would like to know what the chances of pregnancy are, or should I just wait and see?

Hey, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/01/31

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the questioner: There is a possibility of pregnancy even if ejaculation has not occurred, as pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if menstruation does not arrive more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info

Delayed menstruation can indeed be a sign of pregnancy, especially if your menstrual cycle is typically regular, as you mentioned it is around 28-30 days. Engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse, even if the ejaculation occurred outside the vagina, can still pose a risk of pregnancy due to pre-ejaculatory fluid, which may contain sperm.
Given that you are already four days late, it would be advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. The levels of hCG can typically be detected in urine about a week after conception, so testing at this point should yield reliable results.

If the test is positive, it is important to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy and begin prenatal care. If the test is negative and your period still does not start, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes for the delay.
There are several reasons for a missed or delayed period aside from pregnancy. Stress, significant weight loss or gain, hormonal imbalances, and certain medical conditions (like polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid disorders) can all affect your menstrual cycle.
If you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, such as severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while pregnancy is a possibility given your recent sexual activity and the delay in your menstrual cycle, it is essential to take a pregnancy test and consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
