Endoscopic Discectomy

Hello, I would like to ask about my condition.
I underwent endoscopic discectomy on January 26th, where a portion of the herniated disc at the L5 level was removed due to stenosis and compression.
I was able to walk the day after the surgery, but I am experiencing a tingling sensation and occasional sharp pain in the lower calf down to the foot.
Is this a postoperative complication? How long will it take to recover, and which specialist should I see? Thank you.

Jun, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/02/01

More Info

After undergoing endoscopic discectomy on January 26, it is not uncommon to experience sensations such as tingling, numbness, or occasional sharp pains in the lower leg and foot. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the surgery and the healing process.

Firstly, during the discectomy, the surgeon removes the herniated portion of the intervertebral disc that may be pressing on the spinal nerves. While this procedure aims to alleviate pain and restore function, it can also lead to temporary nerve irritation or inflammation. The tingling and pain you are experiencing in your lower leg could be a result of this nerve irritation. It is important to note that nerves can take time to heal, and the recovery process can vary significantly from person to person.

In general, post-operative symptoms such as tingling or numbness can be considered a normal part of the healing process. Many patients report similar sensations after spinal surgery, and these symptoms often improve over time. However, the duration of recovery can vary. Some patients may notice gradual improvement within weeks, while others may take several months to fully recover. It is essential to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions and attend any scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult with your original surgeon or a specialist in spinal disorders, such as a neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon. They can evaluate your condition, possibly through imaging studies or nerve conduction tests, to determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In addition to consulting with your doctor, there are several self-care strategies you can implement to help manage your symptoms. These may include:
1. Physical Therapy: Engaging in a structured physical therapy program can help strengthen the muscles around your spine, improve flexibility, and promote healing. A physical therapist can provide exercises tailored to your specific needs.

2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort. However, always consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication.

3. Activity Modification: Avoid activities that may exacerbate your symptoms, such as heavy lifting or high-impact exercises. Gradually reintroduce physical activity as tolerated.

4. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat or cold packs to the affected area may provide relief from pain and discomfort.

5. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Stress can exacerbate pain perception. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga may help reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.

In conclusion, while the tingling and pain you are experiencing may be concerning, they are often part of the normal recovery process following endoscopic discectomy. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will be crucial in ensuring a smooth recovery. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and your healthcare team is there to support you through your recovery journey.
