Eye issues: Itchy eyes?

Hello, Doctor: A few days ago, my eyes started feeling itchy.
I try to avoid rubbing them, but sometimes I use a tissue to rub them instead.
I also use eye drops; I’m using "Sante de U plus E alfa® Comfort Drops" in the pentagon-shaped red bottle to relieve eye fatigue, but I haven't noticed any improvement.
It feels more like a placebo effect.
Additionally, I sometimes experience nasal allergies (itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion), and during those times, I use a nasal spray.
However, in the past, my allergies didn't usually affect my eyes, and now my nose is fine, but my eyes are still slightly itchy.
Although it doesn't significantly impact my daily life, it is still uncomfortable.
I would appreciate your guidance on this matter.
Thank you!

Hello, your condition may be allergic conjunctivitis.
The medication "Cenovis" eye drops are not effective for allergies.
It is recommended that you visit an ophthalmologist for a proper examination.

Itchy eyes can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience, and understanding the underlying causes, relief options, and treatment strategies is essential for managing this condition effectively. Based on your description, it seems that your itchy eyes may be related to allergies, particularly since you also experience nasal symptoms like sneezing and a runny nose. Let's explore the potential causes and treatment options for itchy eyes.

Causes of Itchy Eyes
1. Allergic Reactions: Allergies are one of the most common causes of itchy eyes. Allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold can trigger an immune response, leading to symptoms like itching, redness, and tearing. Your history of nasal allergies suggests that your itchy eyes may be part of an allergic reaction.

2. Dry Eyes: Insufficient tear production or poor tear quality can lead to dry eyes, which often causes discomfort, including itching. This condition can be exacerbated by prolonged screen time, environmental factors, or certain medications.

3. Infections: Conjunctivitis (pink eye) can cause itchy eyes, along with redness and discharge. This can be viral, bacterial, or allergic in nature.

4. Environmental Irritants: Smoke, pollution, strong odors, and chemicals can irritate the eyes, leading to itching and discomfort.

5. Contact Lens Use: If you wear contact lenses, they can sometimes cause irritation or allergic reactions, especially if they are not cleaned properly or if they are worn for extended periods.

Relief and Treatment Options
1. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: As you mentioned, it's crucial to avoid rubbing your eyes, as this can worsen irritation and introduce more allergens or irritants.

2. Artificial Tears: While you are currently using Sante de U plus E alfa® eye drops, which are designed to relieve eye fatigue, consider using preservative-free artificial tears more frequently. These can help lubricate your eyes and wash away allergens.

3. Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress over your closed eyes can provide immediate relief from itching and reduce inflammation.

4. Antihistamine Eye Drops: Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops can be effective in treating allergic conjunctivitis. These drops can help alleviate itching and redness associated with allergies.

5. Oral Antihistamines: If your itchy eyes are part of a broader allergic response, oral antihistamines may help. However, be cautious as some antihistamines can cause dryness, which may worsen dry eye symptoms.

6. Environmental Control: Reducing exposure to allergens is key. Keep windows closed during high pollen seasons, use air purifiers, and regularly clean your living space to minimize dust and pet dander.

7. Consult an Eye Care Professional: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to consult an eye care professional. They can conduct a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of your itchy eyes and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include prescription medications or further testing.

Conclusion
In summary, itchy eyes can stem from various causes, with allergies being a significant contributor in your case. While over-the-counter eye drops and cold compresses can provide relief, it’s important to identify and manage the underlying cause effectively. If your symptoms do not improve with self-care measures, seeking professional advice is crucial to ensure proper treatment and to rule out any serious conditions. Remember, maintaining good eye hygiene and minimizing exposure to allergens can significantly improve your comfort and eye health.
