Flashes of light in the eyes?

Hello Doctor: Recently, I have been seeing several small spots of light near the bridge of my nose, and there is even a dark spot that appears intermittently.
It is especially noticeable when I am in bright light, which makes it somewhat bothersome when I am trying to see things.
However, when I visited both an ophthalmology clinic and a hospital's eye department, the doctors said there were no abnormalities and only prescribed eye drops to relieve fatigue.
I would like to ask what could be the cause of this? Is it possible that it will resolve on its own, or could it be a sign of a more serious condition? Thank you, Doctor.

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/02/07

Hello: If the examination shows no issues, it may be due to vitreous degeneration and traction on the retina.
This type of symptom can persist for a long time, is not harmful, and one needs to get accustomed to it.

Eye flashes and visual disturbances can be concerning symptoms, and it's understandable that you're seeking clarity on the potential causes and implications of your experiences. Based on your description of seeing small light spots and a black area near your nose, especially when your eyes are strained, there are several possible explanations.

Possible Causes of Eye Flashes and Visual Disturbances
1. Vitreous Detachment: As we age, the vitreous gel that fills the eye can begin to shrink and pull away from the retina. This process can cause flashes of light, often described as "lightning streaks," and may also lead to the perception of floaters or spots in your vision. While this condition is generally benign, it can sometimes lead to more serious issues, such as retinal tears or detachment.

2. Retinal Issues: Although your previous eye examinations did not reveal any abnormalities, it's important to note that conditions like retinal tears or detachments can sometimes develop without immediate symptoms. Flashes of light, especially if accompanied by a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow in your vision, warrant immediate medical attention.

3. Migraine Auras: Even if you do not have a history of migraines, some individuals experience visual disturbances known as aura, which can include flashes of light or zigzag patterns. These symptoms can occur without a headache and may be triggered by various factors, including stress or fatigue.

4. Ocular Fatigue: Prolonged screen time or focusing on tasks without adequate breaks can lead to eye strain, which may manifest as temporary visual disturbances. This is often accompanied by symptoms of dry eyes or discomfort.

5. Dry Eye Syndrome: Insufficient tear production can lead to dry eyes, which may cause intermittent flashes or spots in your vision. This condition can be exacerbated by environmental factors, prolonged screen use, or certain medications.

When to Seek Help
While your recent eye exams have not indicated any serious issues, it is crucial to remain vigilant. Here are some guidelines on when to seek further medical evaluation:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the flashes or spots become more frequent or persistent, it’s important to consult an eye care professional again.

- Acute Changes: Sudden changes in vision, such as a significant increase in floaters, the appearance of new flashes, or a shadow or curtain effect in your peripheral vision, should prompt immediate evaluation.

- Associated Symptoms: If you experience other symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or visual loss, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion
In summary, while the symptoms you describe may be related to benign causes such as vitreous detachment or ocular fatigue, it is essential to monitor your condition closely. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation from an eye care specialist. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially if you notice any changes in your vision. Remember, early detection and intervention can be key in preventing potential complications related to eye health.
