Flashes of light when closing the eyes?
When preparing to get up from bed, I notice flashes of light in the corners of my closed eyes.
Additionally, when I turn my closed eyes from left to right, I also see a flash (and the same occurs when turning from right to left).
What could be the reason for this? Is it caused by exertion of the body? (This does not happen while lying flat.)

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Yuan Yuan: This may be a phenomenon caused by vitreous traction on the retina.
Movement of the body causes the vitreous to shift, which pulls on the retina and produces flashes of light.

More Info
Flashing lights in closed eyes can be a concerning symptom, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for addressing any potential health issues. Based on the information provided, there are several possible explanations for the phenomenon you are experiencing, particularly when you notice flashes while your eyes are closed and when you turn your head or move your eyes.
Possible Causes
1. Vitreous Detachment: One of the most common causes of seeing flashes of light is related to the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, the vitreous can begin to shrink and pull away from the retina, leading to a condition known as vitreous detachment. This pulling can stimulate the retina and create the sensation of flashes of light, even when the eyes are closed.
2. Retinal Issues: While less common, flashes can also indicate more serious conditions such as retinal tears or detachments. These conditions occur when the retina is pulled away from its underlying supportive tissue, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. If you experience persistent flashes, especially accompanied by other symptoms like a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow in your vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
3. Pressure Changes: When you exert physical effort, such as when preparing to get out of bed or turning your head, changes in pressure within the eye can occur. This pressure can lead to temporary visual disturbances, including flashes of light. This is often benign but should be monitored.
4. Neurological Factors: In some cases, flashes of light can be related to neurological issues, such as migraines or other conditions affecting the visual pathways in the brain. Even if you do not have a history of migraines, the brain can sometimes interpret certain stimuli as flashes of light.
5. Eye Fatigue or Strain: If you have been straining your eyes, whether from prolonged screen time or other activities, this can lead to temporary visual disturbances. Eye fatigue can manifest as various visual symptoms, including flashes.
Recommendations
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when the flashes occur, their duration, and any accompanying symptoms. If the flashes become more frequent or are accompanied by other visual disturbances (like a sudden increase in floaters or a shadow in your peripheral vision), it is essential to consult an eye care professional.
- Eye Examination: Since you mentioned that you have already scheduled an appointment with an eye doctor, it is crucial to follow through with that visit. A comprehensive eye examination, including a dilated fundus exam, can help identify any underlying issues.
- Avoid Strain: If you notice that certain activities or positions exacerbate the flashes, try to avoid them. For instance, if turning your head quickly triggers the flashes, consider moving more slowly and deliberately.
- Stay Informed: Understanding the potential causes of your symptoms can help alleviate anxiety. However, it is essential to prioritize your eye health and seek professional advice when needed.
In conclusion, while flashes of light in closed eyes can be benign, they can also indicate more serious conditions. Given your symptoms and the context in which they occur, it is advisable to remain vigilant and consult with your eye care provider for a thorough evaluation. Early detection and intervention are key to maintaining good eye health and preventing potential complications.
