Is ankylosing spondylitis caused by vaccination?
Hello, after recently receiving the BNT vaccine, I experienced several inflammatory symptoms.
After multiple rounds of examinations at the hospital, I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis.
However, the symptoms appeared suddenly and coincidentally after the vaccination.
I would like to know if the vaccine could be one of the triggering factors for the onset of ankylosing spondylitis?

Hello, thank you for your question.
I believe that the BNT vaccine is unlikely to trigger the occurrence of ankylosing spondylitis.
However, current COVID-19 vaccines, including BNT, may indeed induce muscle and joint pain, resulting in symptoms similar to rheumatic diseases.
I suggest that you consult a second physician to confirm your condition regarding ankylosing spondylitis.

Vaccination is a critical public health tool that helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases. However, it is understandable to have concerns about potential side effects, especially in individuals with pre-existing conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of inflammatory arthritis that primarily affects the spine and can lead to severe, chronic pain and discomfort.
In your case, you experienced a sudden onset of inflammatory symptoms following the administration of the BNT (BioNTech/Pfizer) vaccine. While it is essential to recognize that vaccines can elicit immune responses, which may lead to temporary inflammatory symptoms, it is crucial to differentiate between a vaccine-induced reaction and the exacerbation of an underlying condition like AS.
Research has shown that vaccines can occasionally trigger immune-mediated responses in susceptible individuals. This is particularly relevant for those with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions. However, the relationship between vaccination and the onset of ankylosing spondylitis symptoms is not well-established in the medical literature. Most studies indicate that vaccines, including those for COVID-19, are generally safe and effective, with the benefits far outweighing the risks.
In some cases, individuals with AS may experience flare-ups of their symptoms due to various triggers, including stress, infections, or changes in physical activity. It is possible that the stress associated with vaccination, or even the immune response generated by the vaccine, could coincide with a flare-up of AS symptoms. However, this does not imply that the vaccine caused the condition; rather, it may have acted as a trigger in someone already predisposed to such inflammatory responses.
If you suspect that your vaccination may have contributed to the exacerbation of your AS symptoms, it is advisable to consult with a rheumatologist or your primary care physician. They can provide a thorough evaluation and help determine the best course of action for managing your symptoms. Additionally, they can assess whether any adjustments to your treatment plan are necessary in light of your recent vaccination.
It is also important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience severe pain, swelling, or any new symptoms that concern you, seek medical attention promptly. Keeping a record of your symptoms, including their onset and any potential triggers, can be helpful for your healthcare provider in understanding your condition better.
In summary, while vaccination can elicit immune responses that may temporarily exacerbate symptoms in individuals with autoimmune conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that vaccines directly cause the onset of such diseases. It is essential to weigh the risks and benefits of vaccination, especially in the context of public health, and to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns you may have. Vaccination remains a vital tool in preventing serious illness, and managing your underlying condition effectively is crucial for your overall health and well-being.
