Bowel issues
Today, when I felt the urge to have a bowel movement, I didn't go right away and held it in for a while until I finished my tasks.
One stool was a normal brown color, but another had an orange layer on one side, and a small piece was entirely orange.
It seems like the orange color is just on the surface, and there was also a foul odor.
My bowel movements have been normal for the past few days.
What could be the possible reason for this? I would appreciate your insights, doctor.

More Info
When it comes to unusual stool colors, such as the orange hue you described, there are several potential causes and considerations to keep in mind. First, it's important to understand that the color of stool can be influenced by a variety of factors, including diet, medications, and underlying health conditions.
1. Dietary Factors: One of the most common reasons for changes in stool color is diet. Foods that are high in beta-carotene, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and squash, can lead to orange-colored stools. Additionally, foods that contain artificial coloring or dyes can also affect stool color. If you recently consumed a significant amount of these foods, it could explain the orange tint.
2. Medications and Supplements: Certain medications and supplements can also alter stool color. For example, some antacids that contain aluminum hydroxide can cause light-colored stools, while iron supplements can lead to darker stools. If you have started any new medications or supplements, this could be a contributing factor.
3. Bile Production: The color of stool is largely determined by bile, a digestive fluid produced by the liver. Bile is initially green and turns brown as it travels through the intestines. If there is a disruption in bile production or flow, it can lead to changes in stool color. An orange color may indicate that the stool is moving through the intestines more quickly than normal, which can happen due to diarrhea or other digestive issues.
4. Infections or Gastrointestinal Disorders: In some cases, unusual stool colors can be a sign of an underlying gastrointestinal issue or infection. Conditions such as gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or even more serious conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can lead to changes in stool color and consistency. If you experience additional symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or changes in appetite, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
5. Hydration and Constipation: Holding in a bowel movement, as you mentioned, can also lead to changes in stool consistency and color. When stool remains in the colon for an extended period, it can become harder and may take on a different color due to dehydration. Ensuring adequate hydration and regular bowel habits can help maintain normal stool color and consistency.
Given that you mentioned the presence of a foul odor accompanying the orange stool, this could indicate a change in digestion or the presence of undigested food. If this is a one-time occurrence, it may not be a cause for concern. However, if you notice persistent changes in stool color, consistency, or odor, or if you experience any additional symptoms such as pain, weight loss, or changes in appetite, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, stool tests, or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment.
In summary, while occasional changes in stool color can be benign and related to diet or temporary digestive changes, persistent or concerning symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional for further evaluation. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and being mindful of any other symptoms can help you manage your digestive health effectively.
