Jaw Alignment Issues During Orthodontic Treatment - Dentistry

When the mouth is relaxed, it feels uneven compared to when it is clenched tightly?

I would like to consult a doctor.
I am currently undergoing orthodontic treatment and have noticed that my dental midline is different when I clench my teeth compared to when my mouth is relaxed.
When I clench, I feel a slight deviation of my lower jaw to the left upon relaxing, and the midline does not align as it does when clenching.
It feels like my lower jaw wants to shift further to the left, but since my upper and lower teeth are in contact, I cannot move it further, which causes some discomfort.
Is this normal? Additionally, the midlines are aligned when relaxed, but not when clenching.
Which position should be prioritized? Can I discuss these concerns with my orthodontist to seek improvement through treatment? Thank you!

Hello: If you are still in the orthodontic treatment period, it is essential to inform your orthodontist of all concerns.
While not all issues may be resolved through orthodontics, they are related to the final treatment outcome and overall satisfaction to some extent.
Additionally, most people typically experience different occlusions when at rest and during clenching.
Whether alignment can be adjusted to achieve a midline occlusion depends on the specific circumstances.
Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Understanding jaw alignment issues during orthodontic treatment can be quite complex, especially when you are experiencing discrepancies between your bite and the alignment of your teeth. It is not uncommon for patients undergoing orthodontic treatment to notice changes in their bite and jaw position as their teeth shift into their new positions.
From your description, it seems that you are experiencing a misalignment of your midline when biting down versus when your jaw is relaxed. This is a common issue that can arise during orthodontic treatment, particularly if there are discrepancies in how the upper and lower teeth fit together. The fact that your midline is aligned when your jaw is relaxed but shifts when you bite down could indicate that your teeth are not yet in their final positions, and adjustments are still needed.

The sensation of your lower jaw wanting to shift to the left when you bite down could be due to several factors, including the way your teeth are currently positioned, the forces being applied by your braces, or even muscle tension in your jaw. It is essential to communicate these sensations and observations to your orthodontist. They can assess your bite and make necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
In orthodontics, the goal is to achieve a functional and aesthetic alignment of the teeth and jaws. Your orthodontist will likely consider both the relaxed position of your jaw and the position when biting down. Ideally, both should align properly, but it is common for adjustments to be made throughout the treatment process.
If you are feeling discomfort or pain, especially if it feels like your jaw is being forced into an unnatural position, it is crucial to inform your orthodontist. They can evaluate whether the forces being applied are appropriate or if adjustments are needed to alleviate discomfort.
In terms of which position to prioritize—the relaxed or the biting position—your orthodontist will take both into account. They will aim to create a bite that is comfortable and functional when you are chewing, while also ensuring that your midline aligns correctly.
Orthodontic treatment can sometimes feel slow or frustrating, especially when you are experiencing discomfort or misalignment. However, it is essential to trust the process and maintain open communication with your orthodontist. They are trained to handle these issues and can provide you with the best course of action to achieve a healthy bite and alignment.

In summary, your experience of misalignment during orthodontic treatment is not unusual, and it is essential to discuss these concerns with your orthodontist. They can provide guidance and adjustments to ensure that your treatment progresses effectively and comfortably. Remember, achieving the desired results may take time, but with proper communication and care, you can expect improvements in your jaw alignment and overall dental health.
