Accidental ingestion of a fishbone?

This morning, I ate salmon and felt a sharp pain while swallowing, but I'm not sure if I swallowed a fish bone.
My throat doesn't feel uncomfortable.
Two hours later, I experienced neck pain and some numbness in my hands and feet.
I became a bit worried after reading online news and would like to know if these symptoms could possibly indicate a fish bone lodged in my thyroid gland.
Thank you!

More Info

Swallowing a fish bone can be a concerning experience, and it's understandable to feel anxious about potential complications. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the symptoms associated with swallowing a fish bone, what you should do next, and some additional medical insights.

Symptoms of Swallowed Fish Bone
When a fish bone is swallowed, it can lead to various symptoms depending on whether the bone is lodged in the throat or has passed into the esophagus or stomach. Common symptoms include:
1. Sore Throat: You may experience a sharp pain or discomfort in your throat, especially when swallowing.

2. Neck Pain: Pain in the neck can occur if the bone is lodged in the throat or esophagus.

3. Difficulty Swallowing: You might find it painful or difficult to swallow food or liquids.

4. Coughing or Gagging: This can happen if the bone irritates the throat.

5. Nausea or Vomiting: If the bone causes irritation in the digestive tract, nausea may occur.

6. Radiating Pain: Pain may radiate to the ears or back of the neck.

In your case, the neck pain and tingling in your hands and feet could be due to anxiety or muscle tension rather than a direct result of the fish bone. However, if the bone is lodged in a sensitive area, it might cause referred pain.

What to Do Next
1. Stay Calm: Anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms. Try to remain calm and assess your situation.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the pain worsens, or if you develop difficulty breathing, swallowing, or severe pain, seek medical attention immediately.

3. Drink Water: Sometimes, drinking water or eating soft foods can help dislodge a small bone. However, do this cautiously.

4. Avoid Sharp Foods: Until you are sure the bone has passed, avoid eating hard or sharp foods that could irritate your throat further.

5. Seek Medical Attention: If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies (like X-rays) to determine if the bone is lodged somewhere.

Medical Insights
Fish bones can sometimes become lodged in the throat or esophagus, leading to complications such as:
- Infection: If a bone remains lodged, it can cause irritation and lead to an infection.

- Perforation: In rare cases, a sharp bone can perforate the esophagus or other structures, leading to serious complications.

- Thyroid Gland Involvement: While it’s unlikely for a fish bone to become lodged in the thyroid gland, the proximity of the throat to the thyroid means that any irritation or inflammation could potentially cause discomfort in that area.

Conclusion
While the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to swallowing a fish bone, they may also be attributed to anxiety or muscle tension. It’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical attention if they persist or worsen. A healthcare professional can provide the necessary evaluation and treatment to ensure your safety and well-being. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to potential foreign body ingestion.
