Smoking cessation clinic?
Hello Dr.
Tang, I would like to ask if you have a smoking cessation clinic at Chianan Rehabilitation Hospital? I couldn't find any related information on the hospital's website.
Should I make an appointment with you or another physician? Also, the government previously provided subsidies for smoking cessation expenses; is that still available? Could you please explain this to me? Thank you!
QQ, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/07/19
Dr. Tang Xinbei reply Smoking Cessation
Dear friend,
You inquired about the "smoking cessation clinic." Last year, the Department of Health's National Health Bureau and the Central Health Insurance Administration agreed that coverage was limited to internal medicine and family medicine specialists, and only physicians who had completed designated training programs could establish such clinics.
Therefore, our hospital, a psychiatric teaching hospital, was unable to set up a "smoking cessation clinic."
This year, the National Health Bureau and the Central Health Insurance Administration have changed their approach, encouraging physicians to provide "outpatient smoking cessation" services.
This means that during regular outpatient services, physicians can encourage and assist patients who smoke to quit.
Additionally, this year, psychiatrists are also allowed to participate in this program, provided they have completed the designated training programs and have submitted an application to the National Health Bureau for approval.
Patients who agree to participate in the "outpatient smoking cessation" program can receive prescriptions for smoking cessation medications from their physicians, with the government subsidizing part of the costs (which the hospital will apply for from the National Health Bureau), while the remaining balance will need to be covered by the patients themselves.
Currently, our hospital has just had a physician complete the training, but we have not yet submitted an application, so we are temporarily unable to provide this service.
However, we still recommend that you consider visiting a psychiatrist under the health insurance plan to assess any mental health issues that may affect smoking cessation outcomes and to receive necessary assistance.
If you need further assistance, please feel free to contact me directly at 06-2795019 ext.
1537.
Wishing you peace and joy!

More Info
At Chianan Hospital, there is currently no dedicated smoking cessation clinic. The hospital specializes in psychiatric care and, as of now, has not established a formal smoking cessation program. However, there have been recent changes in government policy that allow physicians to provide smoking cessation services during regular outpatient visits. This means that while there isn't a specific clinic, doctors, including those in psychiatry, can assist patients who smoke and are seeking to quit during their regular appointments, provided they have undergone the necessary training.
The government, through the National Health Bureau and the Central Health Insurance Administration, has been encouraging healthcare providers to offer smoking cessation support. This includes the ability for trained physicians to prescribe smoking cessation medications, with some costs covered by the government. However, as of now, Chianan Hospital has not yet submitted an application to provide these services, as they have only recently trained a physician in this area. Patients are encouraged to seek psychiatric consultations to assess any underlying mental health issues that may affect their ability to quit smoking.
Regarding government subsidies for smoking cessation, there are still programs in place. The government continues to support smoking cessation efforts, but the specifics of the subsidies may vary. Patients can receive assistance for smoking cessation medications through their healthcare providers, who can apply for funding from the National Health Bureau. However, any remaining costs not covered by the subsidy would need to be paid out-of-pocket by the patient.
In summary, while Chianan Hospital does not have a dedicated smoking cessation clinic, there are opportunities for patients to receive support through regular outpatient visits with trained physicians. Patients interested in quitting smoking should consult with their healthcare provider to explore available options, including medications and potential government subsidies. If you have further questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to the hospital directly.
