Is it possible to be pregnant?
Hello doctor, my period started on February 7 and ended on the 9th.
I had unprotected intercourse with my husband around February 25 and noticed a slight tearing sensation, which may have been due to the rupture of my hymen, and there was ejaculation.
I did not take any contraceptive pills.
Today, February 28, between 12 PM and 1 PM, I had another instance of unprotected intercourse without taking contraceptive pills.
Since February 25, I have been feeling nauseous repeatedly; I don't feel sick when I haven't eaten, but I start to feel nauseous after eating.
I would like to know if I could be pregnant and when is the best time to take a pregnancy test? Recently, I feel nauseous after eating, but drinking beverages or water does not make me feel sick.
Is this related to pregnancy? Is it true that rupturing the hymen makes it easier to get pregnant?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the early stages of pregnancy may not present specific symptoms, and subjective symptoms alone cannot be used to determine pregnancy.
It is recommended to check for pregnancy if your period is more than a week late.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
When it comes to determining whether you might be pregnant, it’s essential to consider both the timing of your menstrual cycle and the symptoms you are experiencing. Based on the information you provided, your last menstrual period started on February 7 and ended on February 9. You had unprotected intercourse around February 25, which is within the window of your ovulation period, typically occurring about 14 days before your next expected period. Given that your menstrual cycle appears to be around 28 days, your next period would be expected around March 7.
Understanding Pregnancy Symptoms
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as nausea after eating, could potentially be related to early pregnancy. Nausea is a common symptom that many women report in the early stages of pregnancy, often referred to as "morning sickness," although it can occur at any time of the day. However, it’s important to note that nausea can also be caused by other factors, including stress, anxiety, or even gastrointestinal issues.
Timing for Pregnancy Testing
The best time to take a pregnancy test is typically after you have missed your period. This is because pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. Testing too early, such as before your expected period, may result in a false negative because the hormone levels may not be high enough to detect.
In your case, since your next period is expected around March 7, it would be advisable to wait until at least a few days after that date to take a home pregnancy test. If you test too early, you may receive a negative result even if you are pregnant.
Concerns About Intercourse and Pregnancy
Regarding your question about whether breaking the hymen (the "virginity" aspect) makes it easier to get pregnant, the answer is that the presence or absence of the hymen does not affect fertility. Pregnancy can occur whenever sperm is deposited in or near the vaginal canal, regardless of whether the hymen is intact or not. The key factor is whether sperm can reach the egg during ovulation.
Conclusion and Recommendations
1. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, and if they persist or worsen, consider consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
2. Timing for Testing: Wait until after your expected period to take a pregnancy test for the most accurate result. If you miss your period, testing at that point will give you a clearer indication of whether you are pregnant.
3. Consult a Doctor: If you have any concerns about your symptoms or if you experience severe nausea, pain, or any other unusual symptoms, it’s always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which can detect hCG levels earlier than a urine test.
In summary, while your symptoms could suggest pregnancy, the best course of action is to wait until your expected period and then test. If you have further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for guidance.
