Does Night Jasmine Affect Eye Health? Allergic Reactions and Usage - Traditional Chinese Medicine

In clinical practice, does Uncaria rhynchophylla (also known as Cat's Claw) affect the eyes?

Due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction, the doctor prescribed 1 gram of Uncaria rhynchophylla.
After taking it, I felt dryness and itching in my eyes (I have dry eye syndrome, but usually, using artificial tears helps).
However, my body feels fine (no itching).
Does this count as an allergic reaction? Can I continue taking the medication? Thank you, Dr.
Chang, I appreciate it!

Dr. Zhang Weidong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello, Xiao Ke: There are many reasons for itchy eyes, including environmental factors, irregular lifestyle, food, medications, and even contact with unclean objects.
If you are very certain that your itchy eyes are due to medication and not other factors, it may be related to the warming properties of the medication or an initial reaction.
You can try taking the medication a few more times; your body may adapt to it, and the symptoms might improve.
If you still feel uncomfortable, you can ask your original doctor to make adjustments.
This is not an allergic reaction, so you can rest assured.
Wishing you good health.

Night Jasmine, known scientifically as *Jasminum sambac*, is often used in traditional medicine and herbal remedies. While it is celebrated for its aromatic properties and potential health benefits, its effects on eye health, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like dry eye syndrome, warrant careful consideration.

In your case, experiencing dry and itchy eyes after taking Night Jasmine could indeed suggest an allergic reaction or an adverse effect related to the medication. Allergic reactions can manifest in various ways, including skin rashes, respiratory issues, and localized symptoms such as eye irritation. Given that you have a history of dry eye syndrome, it is possible that the components of Night Jasmine may exacerbate your symptoms, leading to increased dryness and discomfort.

When considering whether to continue taking Night Jasmine, it is crucial to weigh the benefits against the discomfort you are experiencing. Here are some points to consider:
1. Consult Your Physician: The first and most important step is to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether your reaction is likely due to the Night Jasmine or if other factors may be contributing to your eye discomfort. Your doctor may recommend discontinuing the medication or adjusting the dosage.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a detailed record of your symptoms, including when they occur and their severity. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.

3. Consider Alternatives: If Night Jasmine is deemed necessary for your treatment, your doctor may suggest alternative medications or therapies that are less likely to irritate your eyes. There are many options available for managing conditions related to autonomic nervous system disorders, and your doctor can help find one that suits you better.

4. Hydration and Eye Care: Since you have dry eye syndrome, continue using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to help alleviate dryness. Staying hydrated and using a humidifier can also help maintain moisture in your eyes.

5. Allergic Reactions: If you notice other symptoms such as swelling, redness, or significant discomfort, it may indicate a more serious allergic reaction. In such cases, seek medical attention immediately.

6. Long-term Effects: Chronic dry eye can lead to more severe complications if not managed properly. It is essential to address any exacerbation of symptoms promptly to prevent potential damage to the ocular surface.

In summary, while Night Jasmine may have beneficial properties, its impact on your eye health, particularly in the context of dry eye syndrome, should be carefully monitored. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that your treatment plan is safe and effective. Your eye health is paramount, and managing any adverse reactions promptly will help maintain your overall well-being.
