Extraction of horizontal wisdom teeth and collection of data and dental casts for orthodontic treatment?

Hello, Doctor: One week after having my impacted wisdom teeth removed, I need to collect data and take impressions for orthodontic treatment.
I would like to know if taking photos and impressions while the extraction site has not fully healed will have any impact.
Should I wait until after the data collection and impressions are completed before removing the impacted wisdom teeth? Thank you.

If the soft tissue has initially healed one week after wisdom tooth extraction, there should be no issues in taking impressions for orthodontic evaluation.

The extraction of wisdom teeth, particularly horizontally impacted ones, can indeed have implications for orthodontic treatment and the collection of orthodontic records. When considering whether to proceed with orthodontic records collection one week after wisdom tooth extraction, several factors must be taken into account.

Firstly, the healing process after a tooth extraction is crucial. Typically, the initial healing phase occurs within the first week, during which the soft tissue begins to close over the extraction site. However, complete healing can take several weeks to months, depending on the complexity of the extraction and individual healing responses. If the extraction site is still tender or not fully healed, taking impressions or photographs may cause discomfort or even exacerbate any existing inflammation. It is generally advisable to wait until the extraction site has healed sufficiently to avoid any complications.

Moreover, the accuracy of orthodontic records is paramount. Impressions taken too soon after an extraction may not accurately reflect the current dental arch and occlusion. This could lead to misalignment in the orthodontic treatment plan, as the position of the remaining teeth may shift slightly during the healing process. Therefore, it is often recommended to wait until the extraction site has healed adequately before proceeding with the collection of orthodontic records.

In terms of timing, if the orthodontic records collection is scheduled for a week after the extraction, it may be prudent to consult with your orthodontist and oral surgeon. They can assess the healing status of the extraction site and determine whether it is appropriate to proceed. If there is any doubt about the healing process, it may be best to postpone the records collection until the site has healed more completely.

Additionally, the decision to extract wisdom teeth before or after orthodontic records collection can depend on the specific orthodontic treatment plan. If the wisdom teeth are expected to impact the alignment of the other teeth or if their removal is necessary for the success of the orthodontic treatment, it may be more beneficial to extract them first, even if it means delaying the records collection.

In conclusion, while it is technically possible to collect orthodontic records one week after wisdom tooth extraction, it is generally advisable to wait until the extraction site has healed adequately to ensure both comfort and accuracy in the orthodontic treatment plan. Consulting with your orthodontist and oral surgeon will provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
