Numbness in the feet and urinary issues?

Hello Dr.
Jiang,
Recently, I have been experiencing numbness in my left foot and difficulty urinating.
After undergoing several tests at the hospital, I was informed that my health is generally good.
An MRI revealed inflammation near the 11th and 12th vertebrae, and I was found to have low levels of Vitamin B12 and folate.
I informed the physician that I received the third dose of the Moderna vaccine on February 18.
The hospital indicated that vaccine side effects could not be ruled out as a cause.
Currently, my treatment involves steroid injections and taking B-complex vitamins along with gastric medication.
Do you have any other recommendations? Thank you.

Hello: You mentioned that "MRI showed inflammation near the 11th and 12th vertebrae, and tests indicated low levels of B12 and folate.
You informed your physician that you received the third dose of the Moderna vaccine on February 18, and the hospital indicated that vaccine side effects cannot be ruled out.
Currently, the treatment involves steroid injections and taking B vitamins and gastric medication.
Do you have any other suggestions?" Your symptoms seem to indicate a serious adverse reaction.
There have been many reports regarding reactions related to the COVID-19 vaccine, and neurological inflammation has also been reported as occurring 5 to 24 days post-vaccination, which may be related to immune responses.
It is advisable to report the vaccine adverse reaction for expert evaluation to determine if it is a serious adverse reaction.
Additionally, supplementing with folate may aid in nerve repair, and it is beneficial to consume antioxidant-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, and deep-sea fish, along with B vitamin supplementation.
Once the nerves stabilize, it is recommended to enhance rehabilitation.
I suggest discussing your ongoing treatment plan with your attending physician.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss further.
Wishing you good health, peace, and joy.
Dr.
Jiang Junyi, Taoyuan Hospital, cares for you.

The symptoms you are experiencing, including left leg numbness and urinary difficulties, can indeed be concerning, especially following your recent vaccination. It is important to understand that while vaccines, including the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, are generally safe and effective, there can be rare side effects that may affect the nervous system. The inflammation observed in your MRI at the levels of the 11th and 12th vertebrae could be indicative of a condition known as myelitis, which is inflammation of the spinal cord, and it may be related to your vaccination or other underlying issues.

Your healthcare provider's consideration of the vaccine as a potential contributing factor is valid, especially since there have been reports of neurological symptoms following vaccination, although these occurrences are rare. The symptoms you describe, including numbness and urinary issues, could be related to nerve irritation or damage, possibly exacerbated by the inflammation in your spine.

The treatment regimen you are currently following, which includes corticosteroids, B vitamins, and gastric medications, is appropriate for managing inflammation and supporting nerve health. Corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation, while B vitamins, particularly B12 and folate, are crucial for nerve function and repair. It is also advisable to maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, including fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, which can support overall nerve health.

In addition to your current treatment, here are some recommendations that may help:
1. Physical Therapy: Engaging in physical therapy can be beneficial for improving mobility and strength in your legs. A physical therapist can design a program tailored to your needs, focusing on exercises that enhance nerve function and reduce symptoms.

2. Occupational Therapy: If your urinary issues persist, consulting an occupational therapist who specializes in pelvic health may provide strategies for managing urinary incontinence and improving bladder control.

3. Regular Monitoring: Keep in close contact with your healthcare provider to monitor your symptoms and adjust your treatment plan as necessary. If symptoms worsen or new symptoms arise, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.

4. Hydration and Diet: Ensure you are well-hydrated and consuming a diet that supports nerve health. Foods rich in B vitamins, such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, can be particularly beneficial.

5. Stress Management: Stress can exacerbate neurological symptoms. Techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or gentle yoga may help manage stress levels and improve your overall well-being.

6. Follow-Up Imaging: If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, further imaging studies may be warranted to assess the extent of inflammation and rule out other potential causes.

7. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms persist, consider consulting a neurologist or a specialist in neuroimmunology who can provide a more in-depth evaluation and management plan.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you are experiencing may be related to the recent vaccination, they could also stem from other underlying conditions. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare team to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. Your proactive approach to seeking answers and treatment is commendable, and with appropriate care, there is potential for improvement in your symptoms.
