Post-Retinal Laser Surgery
Hello, Doctor.
I had retinal laser surgery six months ago, and I recently had an eye exam where my vision was found to be stable.
However, just now I suddenly saw striped patterns in my vision (similar to a water mark), and it persisted even after I took off my glasses.
I immediately closed my eyes and rested for a few seconds, and when I opened them again, the stripes had disappeared.
I would like to know what this condition might be and how I should monitor it.
Additionally, I would like to ask about seeing wavy patterns in my vision from a certain angle (which I experienced once before); it also disappeared after I closed my eyes and rested.

Hello, when the vitreous body degenerates, this kind of situation can occur.
When fluid enters the vitreous cavity, this phenomenon happens.
This phenomenon will return to normal after a while.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the visual disturbances you are experiencing after your retinal laser surgery. It's understandable to be concerned about any changes in your vision, especially after undergoing a significant procedure like retinal laser surgery.
The symptoms you describe, such as seeing wavy lines or patterns (often referred to as visual distortions), can be attributed to several factors, particularly after retinal surgery. Here are some potential explanations for your symptoms:
1. Visual Distortions: After retinal laser surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience visual distortions. These can manifest as wavy lines, ripples, or other unusual patterns in your vision. This phenomenon can occur due to changes in the retina or the vitreous gel that fills the eye. The laser treatment may have altered the structure of the retina, leading to temporary visual disturbances.
2. Vitreous Changes: The vitreous gel can also play a role in these symptoms. After surgery, the vitreous may begin to detach or change in consistency, which can lead to sensations of floaters or wavy lines. These changes can be more noticeable when you are looking at a plain background, such as a clear sky or a blank wall.
3. Retinal Healing: As the retina heals post-surgery, it can undergo various changes that may temporarily affect your vision. The healing process can involve the formation of scar tissue or changes in the retinal layers, which might contribute to the visual disturbances you are experiencing.
4. Eye Fatigue: You mentioned that closing your eyes and resting seemed to alleviate the symptoms. This could indicate that your eyes may be experiencing fatigue or strain, which can exacerbate visual disturbances. Taking regular breaks, especially if you are using screens or reading for extended periods, can help reduce eye strain.
5. Angle of Vision: The specific angle at which you see the wavy lines may relate to how light is refracted through the eye or how the retina is responding to light at that moment. Different angles can create varying visual perceptions due to the way light interacts with the structures of the eye.
Recommendations for Monitoring Your Symptoms:
- Keep a Diary: Document when these visual disturbances occur, how long they last, and any activities you were doing at the time. This information can be helpful for your eye doctor in understanding your condition.
- Regular Eye Exams: Continue to have regular follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist. They can monitor the healing process of your retina and address any concerns you may have.
- Avoid Eye Strain: Make sure to take breaks during activities that require intense focus, such as reading or using a computer. The 20-20-20 rule is a good guideline: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
- Report New Symptoms: If you notice any new symptoms, such as an increase in the number of floaters, flashes of light, or a sudden change in vision, contact your eye doctor immediately. These could be signs of complications that require prompt attention.
- Stay Informed: Educate yourself about potential post-surgical symptoms and what to expect during the recovery process. Understanding that some visual disturbances can be normal after surgery may help alleviate anxiety.
In conclusion, while visual disturbances after retinal laser surgery can be concerning, they are often part of the healing process. However, it is crucial to maintain open communication with your eye care provider and report any changes in your vision. They can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation. Take care, and I hope your vision continues to stabilize and improve!
