Chronic diarrhea since childhood?

I have had gastrointestinal issues since childhood, experiencing frequent diarrhea and poorly formed stools.
I often feel mild abdominal pain when I need to use the restroom, and I go to the bathroom 2-3 times a day.
My diet is quite bland (not greasy and with minimal seasoning), and I rarely eat snacks between meals, consuming fruit only 1-2 times a day.
Could you please help me understand what might be causing this? Previously, when I visited a doctor, they didn't provide much information and simply prescribed anti-diarrheal medication for me to take when it was inconvenient.
Thank you!

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterized by rapid peristalsis, which is generally not harmful to health.
However, it is important to monitor for any signs of blood in the stool or rapid weight loss.
It is advisable to keep medication on hand for when it is needed.

More Info

Chronic diarrhea can be a frustrating and distressing condition, especially when it has been a long-standing issue since childhood. Your symptoms, including frequent bowel movements (2-3 times a day), loose stools, and mild abdominal pain, suggest that you may be experiencing a form of functional gastrointestinal disorder, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or possibly a food intolerance.

Possible Causes
1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. It can cause symptoms like cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation. Stress and certain foods can trigger symptoms, and while your diet seems healthy, individual responses to food can vary greatly.

2. Food Intolerances: Even with a generally healthy diet, you might have intolerances to certain foods that can lead to diarrhea. Common culprits include lactose (found in dairy products), gluten (found in wheat and other grains), and certain types of carbohydrates known as FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols).
3. Infections: Chronic diarrhea can sometimes be a result of lingering infections or parasites, especially if you have traveled recently or consumed contaminated food or water.

4. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Although less likely given your description, conditions like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis can cause chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain. These conditions usually present with more severe symptoms and require medical evaluation.

5. Medications: Some medications can cause gastrointestinal side effects, including diarrhea. If you are taking any medications, it’s worth discussing this with your healthcare provider.

Recommendations
1. Dietary Modifications: Keeping a food diary can help identify any potential food triggers. You might want to consider trying an elimination diet, where you remove common allergens (like dairy, gluten, and high-FODMAP foods) for a few weeks and then gradually reintroduce them to see if symptoms worsen.

2. Hydration and Electrolytes: Chronic diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids and consider electrolyte solutions if diarrhea persists.

3. Probiotics: These can help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut. You might want to discuss with your doctor the possibility of incorporating a probiotic supplement into your routine.

4. Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate gastrointestinal symptoms, consider incorporating stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise into your daily routine.

5. Consult a Gastroenterologist: If your symptoms persist despite dietary changes and over-the-counter treatments, it may be beneficial to see a gastroenterologist. They can perform tests such as stool studies, blood tests, or imaging studies to rule out more serious conditions and provide a tailored treatment plan.

6. Avoid Self-Medicating: While it may be tempting to rely on over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications, they can sometimes mask underlying issues. It’s important to understand the root cause of your symptoms rather than just treating the symptoms themselves.

Conclusion
Chronic diarrhea can stem from various causes, and understanding the underlying issue is crucial for effective management. By keeping track of your symptoms, dietary habits, and any potential triggers, you can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider. This will help in diagnosing the condition accurately and developing a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs. Remember, it’s essential to advocate for your health and seek further evaluation if your symptoms do not improve.
