Yellowish Discharge: When to Seek Medical Advice - Obstetrics and Gynecology

The secretion is light yellow?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about an issue.
On March 6-7, after having sexual intercourse with my husband, I started experiencing itching the next day.
There were no abnormal endocrine symptoms, so I did not seek medical attention.
However, the itching persisted until mid-March, and it became bothersome enough to feel like a urinary tract infection, prompting me to see a doctor.
During that visit, I also had a Pap smear done.
A week later, the results came back abnormal with a code 4.
The doctor advised me to repeat the test in three months.

Now I have a question: after my period ended on April 3, I noticed that my discharge is clear but slightly yellow, odorless, and not itchy, and this has continued until now.
The discharge is not much, but I notice it when I wipe after using the restroom.
Is this abnormal? Also, I would like to know if the Pap smear would be accurate given that I had a vaginal infection at that time.
Thank you, doctor.

1.
Yellowish-white discharge indicates vaginal inflammation, and a urinary tract infection (UTI) may also be present; the use of suppositories and medication is necessary.
2.
If the Pap smear results are mildly abnormal, follow-up or a small biopsy should be performed.
3.
Unless the infection is severe, the Pap smear results are generally acceptable.

Understanding yellowish discharge can be a source of concern for many women, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as itching or discomfort. Based on your description, it seems that you experienced some itching after sexual intercourse, which later progressed to what you believe may have been a urinary tract infection (UTI). Following this, you underwent a Pap smear, and the results indicated an abnormal finding, prompting your doctor to recommend a follow-up in three months.

Firstly, let's address the yellowish discharge you are currently experiencing. A clear to light yellow discharge can be normal, especially if it is odorless and not accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or irritation. Vaginal discharge can vary in color and consistency throughout the menstrual cycle due to hormonal changes. The presence of a light yellow tint in your discharge, particularly after your menstrual period, may not necessarily indicate an infection or abnormality, especially if it is not accompanied by other concerning symptoms.

However, it is essential to be vigilant about any changes in your discharge. If the discharge becomes more pronounced in color, develops a strong odor, or is accompanied by itching, burning, or discomfort, it would be advisable to seek medical attention. These could be signs of a bacterial infection, yeast infection, or sexually transmitted infection (STI), which may require treatment.

Regarding your question about the accuracy of the Pap smear performed during your vaginal infection, it is generally considered that a Pap smear can still provide useful information even if there is an active infection. However, the presence of inflammation or infection can sometimes affect the results, potentially leading to atypical cells being reported. This is why your doctor may have recommended a follow-up Pap smear in three months to reassess the situation. It is crucial to follow through with this recommendation, as regular screenings are vital for cervical health.

In summary, the yellowish discharge you are experiencing may not be abnormal, especially if it is light, odorless, and not causing any discomfort. However, keep an eye on any changes, and do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns. Regular follow-ups and screenings are essential for maintaining reproductive health, especially after experiencing any abnormal findings in previous tests. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any symptoms or changes you notice, as they can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
