Eyes and Light
Hello, I have issues with nystagmus and retinopathy of prematurity, as well as high myopia and astigmatism.
When looking at certain computer screens or projected images, I sometimes perceive a slight flicker in the light, and the text appears to shake.
Occasionally, I even see rainbow-colored lines, but these occurrences are brief, lasting about one second.
If I notice the flickering light for too long, my eyes become uncomfortable, although some screens do not cause this issue; it only happens with specific screens and projections, while others report that they see everything normally.
What could be causing these symptoms? Additionally, after seeing a bright light, I notice various shapes and colors moving in my field of vision.
What is the reason for this? Furthermore, when looking at a strong light source, such as the sun or streetlights at night, I find that peripheral objects appear darker and less clear, with a somewhat reflective sensation.
Is this normal? What causes this? Also, is it normal to have difficulty seeing objects that have even a slight reflection? What is the reason for that? If my glasses prescription is adequate, but I still have to strain my eyes to focus on distant or small text, and sometimes the text is recognizable but still somewhat blurry—not very clear—and if I relax my eyes even slightly, the image becomes more blurred, what could be the reason for this? (Corrected vision is 0.3) Thank you.

Hello, Xin: From your recent questions, it seems that you are quite concerned about your eye issues.
However, we cannot provide a response without a proper examination.
I recommend that you visit a hospital with an ophthalmology department for a thorough evaluation and consult with a physician.
This is the only way to determine the underlying problem, as we cannot make assumptions without proper information.
If there are any lesions in the retina or optic nerve, it can lead to various symptoms, and the response to light may differ from that of a healthy individual.
The causes of these symptoms are related to the pathology of the retina and optic nerve.
As for the extent of functional impairment, it will require multiple tests for accurate assessment.

More Info
Visual disturbances can be quite distressing, especially when they interfere with daily activities such as studying or using electronic devices. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of symptoms that may be attributed to several underlying conditions, including nystagmus (eye shaking), retinopathy of prematurity, high myopia (nearsightedness), and astigmatism. Let’s break down your symptoms and explore potential causes and solutions.
Causes of Visual Disturbances
1. Nystagmus: This condition involves involuntary eye movements, which can lead to difficulties in focusing and visual clarity. It can be congenital or acquired and may be exacerbated by fatigue or stress.
2. Retinopathy of Prematurity: This is a condition that affects premature infants and can lead to vision problems later in life. It may cause issues such as retinal detachment or abnormal blood vessel growth, which can contribute to visual disturbances.
3. High Myopia and Astigmatism: High levels of myopia can lead to a variety of visual issues, including difficulty focusing on distant objects and increased sensitivity to light. Astigmatism can cause blurred vision at all distances due to an irregular shape of the cornea or lens.
4. Visual Fatigue: Prolonged use of screens can lead to digital eye strain, characterized by symptoms such as blurred vision, dry eyes, and discomfort. This is often exacerbated by poor lighting conditions or glare from screens.
5. Light Sensitivity and Afterimages: The phenomenon of seeing colors or shapes after looking at a bright light source is known as an afterimage. This can be more pronounced in individuals with certain eye conditions or those who are sensitive to light.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Regular Eye Exams: It is crucial to have regular check-ups with an eye care professional. They can assess your vision and eye health, and determine if your current prescription is adequate. If you have not done so recently, consider getting a comprehensive eye exam.
2. Corrective Lenses: If your glasses prescription is not sufficient, you may need an updated prescription. Properly fitted glasses can significantly improve clarity and reduce eye strain.
3. Screen Time Management: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This can help alleviate digital eye strain.
4. Lighting Adjustments: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on screens. Using anti-glare screens or adjusting the brightness and contrast of your devices can also help.
5. Eye Exercises: Simple eye exercises can help improve focus and reduce fatigue. For example, try focusing on a near object for a few seconds, then switch to a distant object.
6. Consultation with Specialists: Given your complex history, it may be beneficial to consult with a specialist in low vision or a neuro-ophthalmologist, especially if you continue to experience significant visual disturbances.
7. Lifestyle Modifications: Ensure you are getting adequate rest, managing stress, and maintaining a healthy diet, as these factors can influence eye health and visual performance.
Conclusion
Your symptoms suggest a multifaceted issue that may require a comprehensive approach to management. By seeking professional guidance and making appropriate adjustments to your visual habits, you can improve your visual comfort and clarity. Remember, it’s essential to communicate all your symptoms to your eye care provider to receive the most accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
