After having the lower left wisdom tooth extracted, the upper left wisdom tooth started to hurt?

Hello doctor, I had my lower left horizontal wisdom tooth extracted on April 12th, but since I am allergic to painkillers, the doctor did not prescribe any for me.
After returning home, my upper left wisdom tooth started to hurt.
I would like to know the reason for this.
Could it be related to the anesthesia?

Hello: Pain is inevitable after tooth extraction surgery because the body's tissues are injured and there are wounds in the oral cavity! Please make sure to take the antibiotics and pain relievers prescribed by your doctor (adverse drug reactions are different from drug allergies).
It is advisable to consult with your dentist for additional medications to alleviate symptoms.
Be very careful during the first 48 hours post-surgery, and do not allow the wound to become infected or inflamed! Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Experiencing pain in your upper left wisdom tooth after the extraction of your lower left wisdom tooth can be concerning, and there are several potential explanations for this phenomenon.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the extraction of a wisdom tooth, especially if it is impacted or horizontally positioned, can cause some degree of trauma to the surrounding tissues. This trauma can lead to inflammation in the area, which may affect nearby teeth, including the upper wisdom tooth. The pain you are experiencing could be a result of this inflammation, as the body responds to the surgical procedure by sending more blood and immune cells to the affected area, which can lead to discomfort.

Another possibility is that the extraction process may have inadvertently affected the alignment or position of your upper left wisdom tooth. The roots of the teeth are often interconnected, and the extraction of a lower wisdom tooth can sometimes lead to slight shifts in the positioning of adjacent teeth. This could cause the upper wisdom tooth to feel uncomfortable or painful, especially if it was already in a precarious position prior to the extraction.

Additionally, the use of local anesthesia during the extraction can sometimes lead to referred pain. This means that while the pain is felt in the upper left wisdom tooth, it may actually be originating from the lower extraction site. The nerves in the jaw are interconnected, and irritation or inflammation in one area can sometimes manifest as pain in another area.

It is also worth considering the possibility of a dental infection. Although it is less common, infections can occur after tooth extractions, especially if bacteria enter the extraction site. If the infection spreads, it can lead to pain in nearby teeth, including the upper wisdom tooth. Symptoms of infection may include increased swelling, redness, or pus at the extraction site, as well as fever or a persistent bad taste in the mouth.

Since you mentioned that you are allergic to pain medications, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as swelling, fever, or difficulty opening your mouth, it is important to contact your dentist or oral surgeon as soon as possible. They may need to evaluate the extraction site and the surrounding teeth to rule out any complications, such as infection or dry socket, which can occur after tooth extractions.

In the meantime, you can manage discomfort through non-pharmacological methods. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing some relief. Additionally, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to prevent infection. Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help keep the extraction site clean and promote healing.

In conclusion, the pain in your upper left wisdom tooth after the extraction of your lower left wisdom tooth could be due to inflammation, positional changes, referred pain, or even infection. It is important to keep an eye on your symptoms and consult with your dentist if you have any concerns. They will be able to provide a thorough examination and appropriate treatment to ensure your recovery is smooth and without complications.
