The stool has changed from long to short?
Hello, doctor.
Before March, I used to have large and long stools.
However, after experiencing gastroenteritis, I became concerned about the shape of my stools and started to frequently feel the urge to have diarrhea.
I have health anxiety, and after consulting a doctor, I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) due to increased intestinal motility, along with symptoms of flatulence and bowel sounds.
Currently, I am adjusting my routine by drinking water and taking probiotics in the morning, but I have noticed that my bowel movements have changed to once or twice a day, and the length of my stools has become shorter, unlike before.
Is it possible for this sudden change over the course of a month to indicate colon cancer? I am really anxious about this.

Changes in stool shape can indeed be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when there are significant alterations from what is considered normal. However, it is essential to understand that changes in stool shape can be influenced by various factors, including diet, hydration, and gastrointestinal health.
In your case, you mentioned that prior to March, your stools were typically long and thick, but after experiencing gastroenteritis, you began to notice changes in your bowel habits. This is not uncommon, as gastrointestinal infections can temporarily alter bowel function and stool characteristics. The fact that you have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and are experiencing symptoms such as increased gas and bowel sounds suggests that your gastrointestinal system is still adjusting. IBS can lead to variations in stool consistency and frequency, which may explain the changes you are observing.
Regarding your concern about colon cancer, it is important to note that while changes in stool shape can sometimes be associated with colorectal issues, they are not definitive indicators of cancer. For instance, flat or thin stools can be a sign of a narrowing in the colon, which could be due to various reasons, including benign conditions such as hemorrhoids or more serious conditions like tumors. However, the presence of other symptoms is crucial in assessing the risk of cancer. In your case, you have not reported any blood in your stool, significant weight loss, or other alarming symptoms, which are often red flags for more serious conditions.
Moreover, the sudden onset of changes in bowel habits, such as increased frequency or changes in stool shape, can often be attributed to dietary changes or stress rather than cancer. Since you mentioned that you are taking probiotics and adjusting your diet, these changes can significantly impact your bowel movements. A diet high in fiber, for example, can lead to softer, bulkier stools, while a low-fiber diet may result in harder, smaller stools.
If you are still concerned about the possibility of colon cancer, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly further diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy, especially if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or other risk factors.
In summary, while changes in stool shape can be concerning, they are not always indicative of colon cancer, especially in the absence of other significant symptoms. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, monitor your symptoms, and seek medical advice if you notice any alarming changes or if your symptoms persist. Regular screenings and a healthy lifestyle can also play a crucial role in reducing the risk of colorectal cancer.
