Long COVID: Symptoms and Risks After Recovery - Internal Medicine

Post-COVID syndrome

Hello: Recent news reports indicate that studies abroad have found that individuals who recover from COVID-19 may still experience sequelae.
I would like to ask: 1.
For individuals who have received three doses of the vaccine, if they contract COVID-19, is it still possible for them to have sequelae after recovery? Is the likelihood significantly lower? 2.
For those who have received three doses of the vaccine and experience post-COVID sequelae, are these conditions permanent or temporary? Thank you for your clarification.

A-Du, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/04/17

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine

Hello, 1.
After receiving all three doses, the incidence of side effects is significantly lower, with almost no reports of serious long-term complications.
2.
Most side effects are temporary, and there are virtually no permanent effects.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), refers to a range of symptoms that can persist for weeks or even months after the acute phase of a COVID-19 infection has resolved. This phenomenon has garnered significant attention as researchers and healthcare professionals work to understand its implications, particularly for those who have been vaccinated.

1. Vaccination and Long COVID Risks: Individuals who have received three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine may still experience Long COVID symptoms after contracting the virus. However, studies suggest that the likelihood of developing Long COVID is significantly reduced in vaccinated individuals compared to those who are unvaccinated. The vaccines are designed to bolster the immune response, which can help mitigate the severity of the disease and potentially reduce the risk of lingering symptoms. While the exact percentage of vaccinated individuals who may experience Long COVID is still being studied, evidence indicates that vaccination is a protective factor. Therefore, while the risk is not eliminated, it is indeed lower for those who are fully vaccinated.

2. Nature of Long COVID Symptoms: The symptoms associated with Long COVID can vary widely among individuals and may include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties (often referred to as "brain fog"), joint pain, and other systemic issues. The duration of these symptoms can also vary; some individuals may recover within weeks, while others may experience symptoms for months. Current research indicates that for many, Long COVID symptoms are not permanent and can improve over time. However, the persistence of symptoms can be influenced by several factors, including the severity of the initial infection, the presence of underlying health conditions, and individual differences in immune response.

It is important to note that ongoing research is crucial to fully understand the long-term effects of COVID-19 and the implications for vaccinated individuals. As more data becomes available, healthcare providers will be better equipped to offer guidance and treatment options for those experiencing Long COVID symptoms.

For individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 and are experiencing lingering symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Healthcare providers can offer tailored management strategies, which may include physical rehabilitation, mental health support, and other interventions aimed at alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life.

In summary, while vaccinated individuals can still experience Long COVID, the risk is significantly lower compared to those who are unvaccinated. The symptoms may be temporary for many, but ongoing research is essential to understand the full scope of Long COVID and its long-term implications. If you or someone you know is experiencing persistent symptoms after recovering from COVID-19, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional for appropriate evaluation and management.
