Irregular heartbeat phenomenon
Hello doctor, I occasionally feel 1 to 2 pulsating sensations on the inner side of my left thigh while sitting, which feel like a heartbeat.
When I touch it, I can sense it, and sometimes it also occurs under my left neck.
Is this due to fatigue, or is there another abnormality that requires medical attention? Thank you.

Hello Mr.
Ben: You mentioned that you experience "1 to 2 pulsating sensations on the inner left thigh near the knee while sitting." This symptom may be related to muscle twitching.
Muscle twitching when awake could be associated with certain metabolic disorders, such as hyperthyroidism or electrolyte imbalances.
Additionally, foods that stimulate the nerves, such as caffeine, may exacerbate muscle twitching during wakefulness.
I recommend increasing your intake of B vitamins and reminding yourself to stand up and stretch every half hour to avoid nerve compression and muscle tightness that could worsen your symptoms.
If the symptoms persist without improvement, I suggest consulting a neurologist or a rehabilitation physician for further evaluation and treatment.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to discuss any related questions! Wishing you good health and happiness.

More Info
Intermittent pulsations in the body, particularly in areas like the thigh or neck, can be concerning and may warrant medical attention, especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms. The sensation you describe, where you feel a pulsing or throbbing in the left thigh near the knee and occasionally in the neck, could be attributed to several factors.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that what you are experiencing could be a benign phenomenon. Pulsations can often be related to muscle contractions or spasms, which can occur due to fatigue, stress, or even dehydration. For instance, if you've been sitting for long periods or have engaged in physical activity that your body isn't accustomed to, muscle fatigue can lead to involuntary contractions, which might feel like a pulse.
However, there are other potential causes that should be considered. The sensation of pulsations can also be related to vascular issues. For example, if there is an increase in blood flow to a particular area, it may create a pulsating sensation. This can happen in response to physical activity or even anxiety. Additionally, if there is any underlying vascular condition, such as an aneurysm or vascular malformation, it could also present as a pulsating sensation.
In the neck, the sensation could be related to the carotid artery or other blood vessels. If you are feeling a pulse in this area, it could be the normal pulse of the carotid artery, which is located just beneath the skin. However, if this sensation is new, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, swelling, or changes in vision or consciousness, it is crucial to seek medical advice.
Given your description, here are some recommendations on when to seek medical advice:
1. Duration and Frequency: If the pulsations are persistent and occur frequently, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.
2. Associated Symptoms: If you experience any additional symptoms such as pain, swelling, changes in skin color, numbness, or tingling in the affected area, or if you feel lightheaded or faint, you should seek medical attention promptly.
3. Changes in Activity Level: If you have recently increased your physical activity or have been under significant stress, and you notice these pulsations, it may still be worth discussing with a doctor to rule out any underlying issues.
4. Medical History: If you have a history of vascular issues, heart conditions, or other relevant medical concerns, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while intermittent pulsations can often be benign and related to muscle fatigue or stress, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the pulsations persist or are accompanied by concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment if necessary. Always prioritize your health and well-being by staying informed and proactive about any changes in your body.
