Tonsil problems
Hello, doctor.
Is there something wrong with my tonsils? The granuloma hasn't disappeared for several weeks.
Also, there's a white protrusion below.
If it's a tonsil stone, how can I remove it? (See attached image) https://imgur.com/a/ktwXp3f What could be the possible causes of the redness in my oral mucosa, and how should I address it? https://imgur.com/a/rc0LmOa

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, upon initial examination, the protrusions appear to be tonsillar tissue, and it is difficult to determine if there are any stones present.
The oral mucosa is reddened and appears to be inflamed with ulcers.
If you are concerned or if discomfort persists, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist for examination and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Jue-Yi Cheng, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
When it comes to tonsil issues, it's essential to understand the symptoms, concerns, and treatment options available. The tonsils are two lymph nodes located on each side of the back of your throat. They play a role in your immune system by helping to fight infections. However, they can also become problematic, leading to various symptoms and conditions.
Symptoms of Tonsil Issues
Common symptoms associated with tonsil problems include:
1. Sore Throat: This is often the first sign of tonsillitis or other tonsil-related issues.
2. Swollen Tonsils: Enlarged tonsils can be a sign of infection or inflammation.
3. White Patches or Spots: These can indicate the presence of pus, which is common in bacterial infections like strep throat.
4. Difficulty Swallowing: Swollen tonsils can make swallowing painful or difficult.
5. Bad Breath: This can occur due to the accumulation of bacteria or food particles in the tonsils.
6. Fever: A high temperature may accompany tonsil infections.
Concerns Regarding Tonsil Issues
If you notice persistent symptoms such as a lump or growth (like a granuloma) that does not resolve in a few weeks, or if you see white protrusions that could be tonsil stones (tonsilloliths), it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. Tonsil stones can form when debris, such as food, dead cells, and bacteria, become trapped in the tonsil crypts. They can lead to discomfort, bad breath, and sometimes infection.
Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the symptoms are mild and not causing significant discomfort, your doctor may recommend a wait-and-see approach.
2. Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be prescribed.
3. Saltwater Gargles: Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe a sore throat and reduce swelling.
4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential, especially if swallowing is painful.
5. Tonsillectomy: In cases of recurrent tonsillitis or significant enlargement causing breathing or swallowing difficulties, surgical removal of the tonsils may be recommended.
Addressing Your Specific Concerns
Regarding the granuloma you mentioned, if it has not resolved after a few weeks, it would be wise to have it evaluated by an ENT specialist. They can determine if it is benign or if further investigation is needed. The white protrusions you described could indeed be tonsil stones. These can often be removed at home by gargling or using a cotton swab to dislodge them gently. However, if they are recurrent or causing significant discomfort, a medical professional can provide more effective removal methods.
As for the red oral mucosa, this could be due to several factors, including irritation, infection, or allergic reactions. It is essential to identify the underlying cause to treat it effectively. Maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding irritants (like tobacco or spicy foods), and using soothing mouth rinses can help alleviate symptoms.
In summary, if you are experiencing persistent symptoms related to your tonsils, it is advisable to seek medical attention. An ENT specialist can provide a thorough examination and recommend appropriate treatment options based on your specific condition. Early intervention can prevent complications and improve your overall health and comfort.
