Impacted wisdom tooth?
Hello Doctor, I have a wisdom tooth located at the back left side, embedded in the gum.
The clinic I usually visit referred me to another facility with an oral surgeon for treatment.
Currently, touching the gum causes pain.
Can discomfort from a wisdom tooth lead to an increased heart rate or other uncomfortable symptoms? Do you recommend that I address this issue as soon as possible? Thank you.

Hello: If the clinic physician has referred you to an oral surgeon, it indicates that there is a reason for extraction.
It is advisable to address this matter as soon as possible! (Is it common for discomfort from wisdom teeth to cause an increased heart rate? >> This is rare, and there is no relevant literature.) Sincerely, Lin Chia-Yung, Department of Dentistry, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Impacted wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, can indeed lead to a variety of symptoms and complications if not addressed properly. When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it means that it is unable to fully erupt through the gums, often due to a lack of space in the jaw or because it is positioned at an angle. This condition can lead to discomfort, pain, and even more serious dental issues.
Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
1. Pain and Discomfort: One of the most common symptoms of an impacted wisdom tooth is pain in the back of the mouth, which can radiate to the jaw, ear, or even the head. This pain can be persistent or intermittent and may worsen when chewing or biting down.
2. Swelling and Inflammation: The gums around the impacted tooth may become swollen and tender. If the tooth is partially erupted, food particles can become trapped, leading to infection and further inflammation.
3. Jaw Stiffness: Difficulty in opening the mouth fully or jaw stiffness can occur due to the pressure from the impacted tooth.
4. Heart Rate Changes: While it is less common, pain and discomfort from dental issues can lead to increased stress and anxiety, which may cause an elevated heart rate. This is typically a response to pain rather than a direct effect of the tooth itself.
5. Other Symptoms: Some individuals may experience headaches, earaches, or even sinus pressure, as the impacted tooth can affect nearby structures.
Treatment Options
If you are experiencing pain and discomfort from an impacted wisdom tooth, it is advisable to seek treatment promptly. Here are some common treatment options:
1. Monitoring: In some cases, if the impacted tooth is not causing significant problems, your dentist may recommend monitoring the situation. Regular check-ups can help ensure that no complications arise.
2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort. However, this is only a temporary solution and does not address the underlying issue.
3. Antibiotics: If there is an infection present, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help control the infection before any surgical intervention.
4. Surgical Extraction: If the impacted wisdom tooth is causing significant pain, infection, or is likely to cause future problems, surgical extraction is often recommended. This procedure is typically performed by an oral surgeon and can be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case.
5. Post-Operative Care: After extraction, it is important to follow your dentist's post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing and to minimize complications such as dry socket or infection.
Conclusion
In summary, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to a range of symptoms, including pain, swelling, and even changes in heart rate due to stress and discomfort. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is crucial to consult with a dental professional, preferably an oral surgeon, who can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend the best course of action. Early intervention can prevent more serious complications and help you maintain your overall oral health. Remember, taking care of your dental issues promptly can lead to a healthier and more comfortable life.
