There is a hard lump outside the nipple?

There is a hard, keratin-like substance at the tip of my right nipple.
Previously, there was only a small amount that naturally fell off without pain, and then it grew back.
Recently, there seems to be a tendency for it to proliferate.
It doesn't hurt, but when I touch it, it becomes hard along with the nipple.
After a while, when there is no reaction, it returns to its previous state, but there are still one or two hard spots there.
Doctor, should I be worried?

Tiff, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/04/27

More Info

When it comes to hard bumps on the nipple, it’s important to approach the situation with a clear understanding of potential causes and the appropriate steps to take. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing a condition that could be related to several benign issues, but it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional for a definitive diagnosis.

Possible Causes of Hard Bumps on the Nipple
1. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-painful lumps that can form when sebaceous glands become blocked. They are usually harmless and may resolve on their own.

2. Montgomery Glands: These are small glands located on the areola that can become more prominent during hormonal changes, such as those occurring during menstruation or pregnancy. They can feel firm and may appear as small bumps.

3. Fibroadenomas: These are benign tumors that can occur in breast tissue. They are usually painless and can feel like a firm lump. They are more common in younger women.

4. Intraductal Papilloma: This is a small, benign tumor that forms in the ducts of the breast. It can cause a lump and may sometimes lead to discharge from the nipple.

5. Paget's Disease of the Nipple: Although less common, this condition can present with changes in the nipple and surrounding area, including hard lumps. It is often associated with underlying breast cancer, so it’s important to evaluate any changes in the nipple area carefully.

When to Seek Medical Attention
Given that you have noticed an increase in the size of the bumps and that they change in firmness when touched, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend a clinical breast examination and possibly imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to assess the nature of the lumps.

Diagnostic Steps
1. Clinical Examination: A healthcare professional will examine your breast and the specific area of concern. They will assess the size, texture, and any associated symptoms.

2. Imaging Studies: Depending on the findings from the physical examination, imaging studies may be ordered. A mammogram can help visualize the breast tissue, while an ultrasound can provide more detailed information about the lumps.

3. Biopsy: If there is any suspicion of a more serious condition, a biopsy may be performed to obtain a sample of the tissue for further analysis.

Conclusion
While many causes of hard bumps on the nipple are benign, it is crucial to have any new or changing breast lumps evaluated by a healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and management are key to ensuring your health and peace of mind. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in your body, especially in sensitive areas like the breast. If you have any additional symptoms such as discharge, changes in skin texture, or pain, make sure to mention these to your doctor as they can provide important clues to your diagnosis.
