Please ask your question?
Hello, the day before yesterday while brushing my teeth, I noticed a small bump under my tongue that looks somewhat like the tiny bumps on the surface of the tongue.
I'm not sure if it's normal for there to be something like this underneath.
I happened to visit an ENT specialist, and after hearing my description, the doctor said that it is a normal anatomical structure of the tongue and advised me not to worry too much.
He also mentioned that since there were people coughing in the clinic, I should keep my mask on as I wasn't sick.
However, I had never felt this before, and although I don't particularly notice it now, I would like to ask the doctor if this is something that is normally present on the tongue.
Why didn't I notice it before, or does it sometimes just disappear? Thank you!

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine
Hello, based on your description, it seems that the taste buds or the salivary gland ducts are normally structured, so there is no need to worry.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Understanding bumps on the tongue can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when they notice something unusual in their oral cavity. In your case, you discovered a small bump under your tongue while brushing your teeth, which prompted you to seek medical advice. The doctor you consulted indicated that this bump is likely a normal anatomical structure of the tongue, which is reassuring.
The tongue is a complex organ with various structures, including papillae, which are small, bump-like projections on its surface. These papillae serve different functions, such as taste sensation and providing texture. There are several types of papillae, including fungiform, foliate, and circumvallate, each with distinct characteristics. It's important to note that the underside of the tongue can also have small bumps or structures that are part of its normal anatomy.
In some cases, individuals may not notice these structures until they become more aware of their oral health or when they accidentally brush against them. It's also possible for these bumps to appear more prominent at times due to factors like inflammation, irritation, or changes in the oral environment. For instance, if you have been experiencing any mild irritation from brushing or consuming certain foods, this could lead to temporary changes in the appearance of the tongue.
If the bump you observed is asymptomatic—meaning it does not cause pain, discomfort, or any other unusual sensations—it is likely a benign finding. However, if you notice any changes in size, color, or if the bump becomes painful or persists for an extended period, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, the bump you noticed under your tongue is likely a normal anatomical feature. The reassurance provided by your ENT specialist is valuable, especially since they have the expertise to differentiate between normal variations and potential pathological conditions. If you continue to have concerns or if the bump changes in any way, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Regular dental check-ups can also help monitor any changes in your oral health and provide peace of mind.
