Seeing a sensation like rain?
Lying in bed and looking at the ceiling can create a sensation similar to television static, without any actual colors, akin to the feeling of misty rain when it’s not actually raining.
It seems to move around erratically rather than just falling straight down.
I usually don’t notice this, but I do have floaters and am nearsighted with a prescription of about -5.00 diopters.
I have previously undergone a dilated eye exam, which showed no issues.
I would like to ask the doctor why this is happening.
Thank you very much.

Hello, it may be snow blindness, which is a type of neurological issue.
If the ophthalmological examination shows no problems, you might consider consulting a neurologist.

Visual disturbances can be quite perplexing, especially when they manifest as sensations akin to "rain-like" patterns or visual noise, particularly when lying down and looking at a ceiling. The experience you describe, where you perceive a sensation similar to television static or noise, can be attributed to several underlying factors, especially given your history of myopia (nearsightedness) and floaters (known as "myodesopsia").
Firstly, the phenomenon of seeing visual disturbances, such as the "rain-like" sensations, can often be linked to the presence of floaters in the vitreous humor of the eye. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells that drift in the vitreous, the clear gel-like substance that fills the eye. When light enters the eye, these floaters cast shadows on the retina, which can create the perception of moving spots or lines in your vision. This is particularly noticeable in bright light or when looking at a plain background, such as a white ceiling or sky.
In your case, the sensation of visual noise may be exacerbated by your myopia. Individuals with higher degrees of myopia often experience changes in the vitreous gel as they age, which can lead to an increase in floaters. Additionally, the structural changes in the eye associated with myopia can alter how light is focused on the retina, potentially leading to more pronounced visual disturbances.
Another aspect to consider is the phenomenon known as "visual snow." This condition is characterized by the perception of tiny flickering dots across the visual field, similar to the static seen on a television screen. While the exact cause of visual snow is not fully understood, it is thought to be related to how the brain processes visual information. Some individuals with visual snow report that their symptoms are more noticeable in low-light conditions or when they are in a relaxed state, such as lying down.
Moreover, the experience of visual disturbances can also be influenced by factors such as fatigue, stress, or even the position of your head and eyes. When lying down, the dynamics of how light enters the eye can change, potentially leading to different visual perceptions. If you are particularly tired or stressed, your brain may also be more sensitive to visual stimuli, making you more aware of these disturbances.
It's important to note that while these visual disturbances can be concerning, especially if they are new or have changed in nature, they are often benign, particularly if you have had a thorough eye examination that ruled out serious conditions such as retinal detachment or macular degeneration. However, if you notice any sudden changes in your vision, such as an increase in the number of floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your peripheral vision, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
In summary, the "rain-like" sensations you are experiencing may be related to your existing floaters and myopia, as well as potential factors like visual snow or changes in visual perception when lying down. While these symptoms can be bothersome, they are often not indicative of a serious underlying condition, especially if your previous eye examinations have shown no significant issues. However, maintaining regular check-ups with your eye care professional is essential to monitor any changes in your vision and ensure your ocular health remains stable.
