Numbness in the limbs?

Hello doctor, about half a month ago I started feeling numbness near the left side of my wrist, which then extended down to my elbow and palm.
After that, I experienced slight numbness in my right hand, and now both of my feet are numb as well.
The numbness is mild and does not involve any tingling.
I would like to know if this could be a sign of a stroke.

Hello: Numbness in the extremities is usually more related to peripheral nerves and is not a common symptom of a stroke.

More Info

Numbness in the limbs can indeed be concerning, especially when it presents in a pattern that affects both sides of the body, as you described. While it is essential to consider various potential causes for your symptoms, it is crucial to understand that numbness can be a warning sign of a stroke, but it is not the only possibility.

In your case, the numbness began in your left hand and progressed to your elbow and palm, followed by similar sensations in your right hand and eventually in both feet. This pattern raises some important considerations. Typically, stroke symptoms are characterized by sudden onset and may include weakness, numbness, or paralysis on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, or changes in vision. The bilateral nature of your symptoms (affecting both hands and feet) is less typical for stroke, which often presents unilaterally.

Other potential causes of numbness in the limbs include peripheral neuropathy, which can result from diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or exposure to toxins. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cervical or lumbar radiculopathy, and even anxiety can also lead to similar sensations. Given that your symptoms have progressed over a couple of weeks, it is essential to seek medical evaluation promptly.

A thorough neurological examination is necessary to assess your symptoms accurately. This may include imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan to rule out any structural issues in the brain or spinal cord. Blood tests can also help identify underlying conditions that may contribute to your symptoms, such as diabetes or vitamin deficiencies.

In summary, while your symptoms could potentially indicate a stroke, the bilateral nature and gradual onset suggest other possibilities. It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your numbness. Early intervention can be vital in managing any potential neurological issues effectively. If you experience sudden changes in your symptoms, such as increased weakness, difficulty speaking, or severe headache, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
