Unsure if pregnant?

Hello, Doctor.
My first menstrual period after giving birth started on April 12.
I began taking ovulation medication from April 14 and continued until April 26.
I had intercourse on April 26 and 27, with ejaculation inside.
I started using a small white ball on May 1, and it has been 14 days since the last intercourse, but the pregnancy tests have only shown one line.
I've been experiencing dizziness, nausea, and poor sleep lately.
Yesterday (May 9), I felt discomfort in my abdomen as if my period was about to start, but I haven't had my period and I don't have breast engorgement.
How much longer should I wait to take another test, or do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Guan, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/05/10

Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Determining whether you are pregnant can be a complex process, especially when you are experiencing symptoms that may overlap with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In your case, you have been trying to conceive and have been tracking your menstrual cycle and ovulation closely. Given your situation, let’s break down the factors involved in assessing whether you might be pregnant.

Firstly, it’s important to understand the timing of ovulation and when to take a pregnancy test. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next expected period. Since you mentioned that your last menstrual period was from April 12 to April 14, and you had intercourse on April 26 and 27, it is possible that you could have conceived during this time, depending on your ovulation cycle. The use of ovulation medication may also affect the timing of ovulation, so it’s essential to consider that.

You mentioned that you have been experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and abdominal discomfort, which can be indicative of early pregnancy. However, these symptoms can also be associated with PMS or other factors unrelated to pregnancy. The key symptom that typically indicates pregnancy is a missed period. Since you have not yet received your period, it is advisable to wait a few more days before taking another pregnancy test.
Pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterus. This hormone can usually be detected in urine about a week after a missed period. If you test too early, the levels of hCG may not be high enough to be detected, which could explain why you are only seeing one line on your pregnancy tests.

Given that you have already taken tests on May 9 and have seen only one line, it may be beneficial to wait until at least the day your period is due or a few days after to test again. If your period does not arrive and you continue to experience symptoms, consider consulting a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier and more accurately than a home urine test.

In summary, here are some recommendations:
1. Wait a Few Days: If your period does not arrive, wait a few more days and then take another pregnancy test.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If they persist or worsen, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

3. Consult a Doctor: If you have concerns about your symptoms or if you continue to get negative pregnancy tests despite a missed period, it’s a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may suggest pregnancy, the most reliable way to confirm is through a pregnancy test taken at the appropriate time. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice.
